iPod question
« on: April 20, 2005, 04:22:03 AM »
Hi, all,

My wife bought an iPod yesterday, and I'm wondering if there is a way to digitally transfer our CD collection to it without having to get a PC involved. Any clues?

Thanks,
- NF

Not that I have heard of.

You need either a Mac or PC depending on which version of the iPod you have. The software you install on the PC reads the information on the CD and encodes it into a format that is readable by the iPod. It also compresses the file so that more songs will fit on the iPod. The compressed file size is what they base their advertised capacity on.

Well, in the ipod's defense, it is an MP3/AAC/etc player, not a CD player.  Perhaps not the wisest choice for listening to CDs.  And note MP3 player, no recorder.  Compressing into a portable format takes a lot more processing power than the iPod has.

I just wanted to transfer the CDs to the iPod, digitally, and without having to throw out my computer and buy a new one because it's backversioned and then haul each and every one of our CDs into the office and tie up the new expensobox for hours. I know it's technologically possible to build an iPod interface into a CD jukebox or DVD player; heck, with enough time and bucks I could do it myself. Just wondering if someone else had gotten there first.

since there is an analog input via the italk, you could mp3 via audio out from a cd player

the files would not be "named" though

OTOH, since I'm running Linux (Fedora Core 3 now, sorry Ubuntu fans Wink ), mebbe gtkpod is an option... cool

OTOH, Mrs. Firethorn would have to upgrade her W2K box.

What part do you want? USB 2, Firewire, HFS+ filesystems, the MP3 standard, DAC and ADC design, SMDs...

What's wrong with your PC that it won't work for the iPod?  When my girlfriend bought one I ended up buying a USB2 firewire card for about $15 on newegg.com, and that was all I needed.  I thought iTunes ran on pretty much any version of windows.

Otherwise, a friend of mine uses a Griffin to record his pre-med lectures, and he loves it.

Apparently not so. My wife has NT and it wants W2K or later according to the docs. (The docs could be wrong, tho.)

I just did some googling, and apparently it's not even Apple's fault--Windows NT doesn't support USB or Firewire!

You learn something new every day, huh?

Looks like short of upgrading NT to 2, your best bet is going to be gtkpod and something like Grip.

Got 'em both on my Linux box at home. The Missus is a little leery of me messing around with the guts of her new $300 toy, though. Can't imagine why. Tongue
