On Friday [Chief of Police] Bird announced that future lockdown drills will be conducted by uniformed officers without weapons.
Wonder how they will pantomime breaking down a door with the imaginary butt of their imaginary rifles/shotguns. And I do want video of them with their finger-pistols going "Pew, pew, pew!" At least then when they hold unannounced drills the chances of scaring the kids and teachers will be lessened, although there is still the risk of injury from falling on the floor laughing at the cops running around playing "Cops and Active Shooter".
Not so very long ago some of the former-cop "security specialists" were advocating kids throwing books/book bags at someone who burst into the room with a weapon, and then dogpiling them. The theory was that while some kids migh get wounded/killed it lessened the odds of all of them getting wounded/killed.
Seems to me it was right around the time of Va Tech that things changed and huddling in the dark was the new way to go. If you recall that was when "They" started talking about the first cop on the scene of a reported active shooter not waiting for backup/SWAT but to go in alone and end things right then. The first one caught on big time. The second notion? Not so much.
Now while the kids are all huddled up they are encouraged to pull their bullet-resistant blankie

All this while the Members of Parliment in Canada are grabbing flagpoles and holding them at the ready to skewer the first person who pushes through their improvised barrier of desks and chairs piled in front of the door and their Sergeant at Arms gets his gun from his desk and tracks down a shooter without a stack of whatever Canada calls their Delta Force at his back.
Locally there was a drill for EMS types responding to an active shooter scenario at the local mall. They held it before the mall opened, and besides the LE assigned to be inside simulating running around being shot and running around shooting they had all sorts of folks blocking off the parking lot entrances so no early-morning mall walker would wander into the middle of things. (I still can't find out if the rifles and shotguns were unloaded but duty sidearms were not. Thankfully no cardboard cutout BGs were riddled during the exercise.) And yes, the cops still hung around until they could stack up and then went inside.
stay safe.
