I connected the Ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports to the asus after the WAN port didn't work. I also turned off the wireless in the setup for the frontier router. Seems to be working so far.

That's the way to go. What model is the combo unit? There are walkthroughs to put it into a mode that will let your new Asus do the actual routing. That's how you want to end up.

Found this thread 4 hours after ordering a different brand.  Cancelled order and got the suggested Asus.
Super easy install, super fast connection.
