Any private pilots here?
« on: June 13, 2015, 01:42:53 PM »
I got my single engine land license in 2005. About 500 hours logged since. I don't own a plane I have to rent at $140 per hour so it's some thing I do only after saving up. A hell of a lot of fun, but expensive to be sure.

Anyway do any of you have the flying bug?

How long does it take to get you license. I am afraid of flying, and was tossing around the idea of confronting my fear by getting my pilots license.

There's been a running article in the last few Popular Mechanics about that very subject: getting a license in spite of the fear.

Lots of things come in play in how long it takes. Go to your local flight school and take What they call a "introductory flight." You will learn basic  flight controls and that will help stop your fear of flying.

Some. Been too busy with work and seldom have time and money to go flying nowadays. Planning to get more back into it after I get done with school next year.

I would like to get a pilots license some time.

Not Private anymore, but I do have Commercial and ATP.

Earned my license on January 5th, 1988 and been trying to quit since.

For those of you thinking about flying lessons, look into the Recreational license. It is a cheaper less expensive option to the Private license.

Edited to fix license name.

There is, or at least was, the recreational certificate but it was pretty restricted and I don't think I have ever come across anyone who got one. Pretty much superseded by the Sport Pilot, which is a better deal IMHO.

ATP doesn't carry with it private pilot privileges? I'm genuinely surprised. I would have presumed anyone rated to fly other people around for money would automatically be qualified for private aircraft.

Yes, it does.  I can still fly single-engine and multi-engine land aircraft just like a Private pilot can.  I have to have the ATP for the airline job.  It is the "highest ranking" certificate, but it is backwards compatible, so to speak.

As the license is upgraded, the old license is surrendered.  So, I am legal to fly the bug-smashers, but I no longer have a Private Pilot Certificate.

Nope.  I just boss them around.
Seriously though if you have ATC questions while getting your license just speak up.

Very close, but more restrictions on what, where, and when you can fly.

Question: Can I just tell you I have ATIS without telling you which one?

Follow up question: There's hardly anyone around. Can I do a runup on the numbers?
