You DON'T have basic tools like a set of punches? Dude, we'll let you slide this time, but if it happens again, you'll have to turn in your man card.

I have a set. There are only two in that set, but it's a set.

I guess I could go out and shoot some white people. They don't matter.

Someone on another forum suggested I buy a set of punches at Harbor Freight. The nearest HF is on West Florissant Road, in Ferguson.

There you go.  Just do your maintenance on the hood of your car, in the parking lot.

I can tell you that our Ruger 10/22 starting squeaky clean and lubed with Rem Oil, can not complete a one-day Appleseed without a good cleaning.

I cleaned mine a few years ago after about 10-15 years. Still seemed to work OK. Had a steady diet of CCI mini mag.

I survived my trip to Fergustan.

And, the Harbor Freight punch set had the correct size, enabling me to remove the firing pin.

I was able to get to the range today, and fired about 20 rounds through the .22. The problem seems to have disappeared, since the detail-strip and cleaning. It may also have helped that I rubbed the flat sides of the firing pin against a Norton fine India stone a few times.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm planning to take a new guy (our preacher) to the range next week, which is the whole reason I got this old thing out of the closet to begin with. At least now I can start him off on a rifle that actually goes bang when he pulls the trigger.

Mine acted up like that after I had it a couple of years, ended up being the barrel was a little loose from the receiver. Just tightened up the Allen bolts and it has ran fine ever since then.

How many rounds and what kind of ammo were you using?  Just curious.

You good man.

Not gonna start the new guy on a S&W 500?

Like I said, he's a preacher. He doesn't need additional brain damage from getting a front sight between the eyes.

Weird, mine made it through several.  It would never have made it suppressed, but unsuppressed it did just fine.  Lubed with CLP and Federal 550rd bulk packs.  Stock barrel and trigger, the only internal mod was I installed a plastic RAM-Line extended magazine release back in the 90's and opened up the magazine well slightly so the rotary magazines would drop free.  The barrel was cut down to 18.5", threaded, and the front sight reinstalled.

Now, mine hates everything remington.  But Federal, CCI, Blazer, Aquila, Fiochi, and Wolf are all just fine.  It gets the best accuracy from CCI standard velocity.  Never had a magazine issue other than I completely wore out a few ram-lines - the old pre-AWB ban ones with the evil thumb abrading feed lips and stiff springs.
