"so I ended up getting the above because I didn't want to make a whole production of sticking something between my knees and cranking. To me, the cranking on mine is pretty effortless, at least on the coarse setting. Maybe if someone has arthritis or something, it would be more difficult for them." - Ben

What do we gain by poking them right now?

Another distraction for the media focused on.

Just laying down a marker WRT free navigation of the seas.  And showing allies we are not dead yet.  If everyone gets used to obeying the Red Chinese when they call out threats, they will eventually get what they want and call the shots.

Depending on how close the artificial islands are to the Red Chinese mainland, they could destroy any/all US Navy vessels with their guided missiles, they got so many.  To include our flat tops, the aircraft of which have shorter effective range given we are using F18s to in-air refuel F-18s.

Hopefully, reimbursement from the other seafaring merchant nations for our fuel costs.

Yes, it's mostly a dog & pony show for Obama to show that he really is strong and can effect foreign policy as well as project what's left of American geopolitical power.

Not to worry, the Captain of the ship and the Admiral(s) responsible for offending our good friends the Chinese will soon be sacked for reasons not related to this incident...

Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,

We still won't cross the line that Iran says is there side, which extends past the 12NM rule.
