What do you think your web browser is doing?

Don't you assume you cable box is doing the same thing?

I always figured that if you connect your devices to the internet, you are pretty much allowing whatever it is to report basic data.  It doesn't take much data to be useful if they have it from everyone.

I wonder...if I keep watching the shooting shows on the Outdoor Channel, and all of the cop shows, The Walking Dead, etc., will it start showing me commercials for guns?

The targeted advertising off of web browsers is pretty intense.
I can browse an item on my home computer and I'll start seeing ads for that or similar items anyplace there is ad space on various websites. The scary part is that I'll be seeing the same new ads on my work computer even though in theory they should not be linked being 2 different user IDs. I'm thinking log into a website and your web persona is linked to that device and cross matched to everywhere else you go.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Samuel Adams
