Looks like we have a serious case of triptophan overload going on here. This calls for black coffee STAT!!  cheesy

FoodTV says the tryptophan nap is a non-issue, it's the carbohydrate overload that causes the post-meal sleepiness.

Regardless, turkey this year was done properly, 350-degree peanut oil, and a 17 pound bird injected with 4 sticks of melted butter just before it went into the boiling dunk.

Here's the setup when cooking turkey for 10 people.  Note the nice green grass here in Wisconsin, vs. snow, it was just over 60 degrees today:

Birdy ever-so-slowly being lowered into the peanut oil:

Let 'er rip for an hour:

It came out so well, there were no leftovers.  Sad

Yep, I WAS thinking about you and fried turkey last couple days. When I picked mine up one of the other people in line was telling us about the whole procedure and how Target has the setup for like $29. Maybe next year.  grin

I needed a 2.5 hr nap yesterday after dinner!

Nephew raised 15 turkeys on his place just outside of town.  He butchered them last Sunday and provided one of the smaller hens (27 lbs) for the family feast which we cooked at our house and ate next door at MIL's house.

He smoked several of them and we bought one from him which was delivered still hot at midnight on Thanksgiving eve.  Wife and I were up past 2 AM carving/freezing that bird which went into the smoker at 35 lbs.  I got up at 7 to put the bird in the oven, and by 3 PM was really in need of a nap after 6 hrs in the kitchen.

Dinner was wonderful.  Everything from scratch including fresh bread and homemade egg noodles boiled in broth.
Known from coast to coast, almost!

350-degree peanut oil,
When you use peanut oil or peanuts/nuts in a recipe please let whoever is going to eat the dish know that peanuts/nuts are in them.

We had a child in our daycare that took one tiny bite of a peanutbutter/cracker snack and ended up in the emergency room with an allergic reaction to the peanutbutter.

Allergic reactions to peanuts/nuts can, and have been deadly.

Nobody here but us elephants in my family, so peanuts are no problem.

I actually had one of my flyers divulge his allergy to peanuts AFTER he took a few bites of a cake w/PB frosting.

Once we got done reminding him that he was an idiot for eating it, he got a ride to the flight surgeon's before his airway closed on him.

I guess next time we serve fugu we'll have to hand out consent forms, too.  Wink

So no, I don't think I'm going to warn people I use peanut oil in my turkey frying.  If they die, their carcasses go into the oil, dibs on the white meat...

Deep fried turkey is king.

My dad, brother and I nerded it up, though. We set up an aluminum A-frame ladder over the turkey fryer and set an electric engine winch up on a bar over its upper rungs, so the coat-hanger thing that hooks into the big metal grappling-hook inside the turkey could be fitted to the winch and used to raise/lower the bird.

Mmmmm...

Additional turkeyday thought: a peanutbutter and cranberry-sauce/conserve sandwich is despicably delicious.

If you want pheasant in the freezer, get a job mowing hay.  The pheasents just love that tall grass.  When the mower comes along they seem to either hunker down with their heads up, or try to run.

Results are that you either cut their heads or their legs off.  Either way they are yours.

When we moved off the farm, we had about 30 pheasants in the freezer

Went for small game Friday. Offed a poor defenseless squirrel but hey, I stalked it fair and square and when it decided to poke it's cute little furry head out from it's hiding spot after a good long wait and pretty much right in my sights there was nothing else I could do so I blasted it. When it popped out right in front of me I figured it was a sign or something. Ended up leaving it though because I then discovered my usual garbage bag or two was not in my pack so I had no way to take it out of the field unexposed and back to the road where all the soccer moms and kiddies drive by.  There was plenty of coyote scat around though so I'm sure it didn't go to waste. Either way I got a good amount of exercise in the 4 hours I was out there which is one of my goals with this hunting stuff anyways. Can't wait to go again. This time with a bag though. It beats the crap out of trudging through the woods endlessly for no particular reason like I used to do. Best part is this particular 865 acres of designated hunting land is about 1 mile down the road from my house.  grin
