The old stand-by of SOS:

Ingredients

1 pound chipped or ground beef
    2 Tablespoon butter
    1/4 cup flour, all purpose
    1 cube beef bouillon
    3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 tsp. ground black pepper (or to taste)
    2 1/4 cups milk
    1/4 teaspoon worcestershire sauce (optional)

How to make it

Brown beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Set beef aside.
Melt butter in skillet over medium heat.
Slowly add the flour, stirring constantly, to form a brown roux.
    Add the bouillon.
Gradually stir in the milk and Worcestershire sauce, mixing well.
Add the cooked ground beef, salt, and pepper.
Bring all to a simmer, stirring constantly. Serve hot over buttered toast.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Well that wouldn't a military recipe because that would have flavor.

I was talking to a friend about biscuits and gravy, and he says that he has two secrets to making flavorful gravy...

First, brown the living hell out of the sausage to get a really heavy pan fond.

Second, deglaze the pan with a half cup or so of a decent white wine and let it reduce.

lol, no kidding.  Not a biscuits and gravy thing, but I remember the first time I was served "hashbrowns" in the chow hall.  They were served with an ice cream scoop and were basically poorly mashed mashed potatoes.  I think they just boiled potatoes, skin on, and whacked them a couple of times with a masher.
