fitz,
Is it because you lost the strength and dexterity, or forgot the fingering and runs etc (the music)?

Not necessarily a bad thing, though.   Sometimes after a hiatus from playing I go back to the guitar and find new fingerings or ideas, then realize I was stuck in a rut before. Even the same riffs played in a different place can open up new sounds. Guitar is an amazing instrument, the possibilities are endless. Notes can be bent, slid, trilled, vibrato'd, choked, played singly, doubly, in chords, on and on. And that is just the fretting hand. It is a intimate instrument and it is astounding how good some people get at playing it.

^^ This!  (But with a bass.)

Playing bass in a band for a year absolutely made me a better guitarist

I picked up my old clarinet after almost 40 years off, and was pleased that I still remembered the fingerings, but my old bad habits were gone.  (whatever skill I had was also gone, I but expected that)

My brother picked up the guitar at he post office yesterday.  The tuner, stand, picks, and lesson book that I ordered from Amazon also was delivered yesterday.  My mom was pleased; she says Dad doesn't suspect a thing.
"It's good, though..."
