Army grenade attacker gets death sentence

Sorry if this was posted, don't see it.  The American (I hesitate to call him a soldier) that killed two soldiers in the grenade attack about the time of the onset of the war got the death penalty.  http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/04/28/akbar.trial.ap/index.html

Does this work like it does with civilians, that he will have years of appeals, or is it more of a quick thing.  The article mentions that there were like five others on death row, but made no mention of how long they have been there.

If I remember my military law correctly, it is a bit more expeditious.  The general who convened the court martial reviews it and can reduce the sentence.  Then it goes to the Army Court of Criminal Appeals, and then Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.  The only thing left after that is the U.S. Supreme Court.

Best news I've heard all day.

Sounds like true justice may be soon to be served.

The fact that Akbur killed a Major and a Captain sealed his fate.  Murder is one thing in the military, but an enlisted guy who murders officers is toast.  Always been that way, probably always will.  Regardless of who the victims were, this lowlife is getting exactly what he deserves.

No sympathy for wanton killers.

No sympathy at all from me, either.  Glad to see that he won't have practically a life sentence instead of death.

What is the current means of execution in the military?

Sadly, it's lethal injection. IMO they should draw a firing squad from the 101st, stand him against a wall, and bill his family for the bullets!

Sadly, the guy may die of old age before the military gets around to giving him a ride on old sparky, so to speak.

The military does not execute its own condemned criminals - they are transferred (as are most long-term military prisoners) to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.  The only Federal execution site at present is the high-security penitentiary at Terre Haute, IN, where Timothy McVeigh was executed a few years ago.  This guy will almost certainly end up on Death Row there, and be executed there as a federal prisoner.

Unfortunately, execution is probably more to his taste than imprisonment.  He'll be regarded as a martyr for Islam, and treated like a hero in most of the Islamic fundamentalist circuit.  IMHO, better to sentence him to life imprisonment without parole, to avoid this.

Haven't his defence claimed that he has forms of schziophrenia and suffers from paranoid delusions?

Good ruling...

Don't let the door hit ya where the Good Lord split ya, bastard.

Also, I almost forgot to tell ya Akbar, you and your boys should get set up downstairs for a nice little pow wow. I have a feeling there will be a bunch more islamo-fascists joining you over the next few years... angry

Unspeakable cockroach of a human. Premeditated murder by surprise attack of one's fellow soldiers in a combat zone is the foulest offense imaginable. GRrrr...
