A New Favorite Actor
« on: September 22, 2016, 09:28:27 PM »
I've recently been watching the Jesse Stone movies starring Tom Selleck. Besides finding the movies quite good,  I have discovered a great actor - the dog (appears to be a Golden Retriever, but a large one). Jesse ends up with the dog of a murdered man in the first movie of the series. The dog is featured in all the other movies (at least up to the ones I watched).

Somehow, between the dog being well trained, the dog's natural expressions, and the great way they cut to the dog for effect at just the right times and with just the right camera angles, he is practically human. He kind of comes off, from his expressions, as a real life version of the intelligent dogs in The Far Side. Only as serious versus comedic. Anyway, I thought it was a well done use of a dog as a human analog for when Jesse, a man of few words who doesn't open up to people, is pondering his problems. Not so much in the first movie, but more so in the rest of the series.

Jesse Stone fan here too.  And yes, the dog is fantastic! I also really enjoy the way the dialog is written. Sure, there's a good bit of predictability to the plots, but the payoff is in the execution.

Where are you seeing these movies? Amazon? Netflix?

And yes, the dog is a Golden.

I've only found them on Netflix DVD. It's one of the reasons I've kept the DVD service along with streaming - a lot of stuff I end up liking a lot is still only available on physical media.

I see a couple on Amazon Prime, but they are not free.

The wife Tivo'd the whole bunch from the Hallmark channel a while back.  We had seen them before, but then spent a weekend binge-watching them again.

I really like the series, too, and so bought DVD's of all episodes.

Selleck is good, but the dog is great. I liked Boomer, too.

For anyone who hasn't watched the series, but is going to, my suggestion is to watch #2 (Night Passage) first and #1 (Stone Cold) second. In #1, Stone is already the police chief. In #2, Stone moves from LA to Paradise to become the police chief.

It also makes the Boomer/Reggie transition a little clearer. Apparently from Wiki, a third dog is introduced later, but I haven't gotten that far yet, don't know why, and don't want to know why (poor Reggie?).  =(

I like that Selleck keeps the 1911 thing going... :)

If your cable company provides "get TV", check it for Jesse Stone.  The wife says they're showing them.
