I don't mind ads. I DO extremely mind dousing a page with them. I mind even more audio and video ads, period. Auto-start audio and video ads are even more infuriating.

Birdman hit it on the head. I'm willing to pay for decent quality articles. Just not too much in piecemeal all over the place. Netflix for news would be pretty nifty, and likely it is going to come to that someday.
"Rev, your picture is in my King James Bible, where Paul talks about "inventors of evil."  Yes, I know you'll take that as a compliment."  - Fistful, possibly highest compliment I've ever received.

And I think part of it is that they are trying to support the print portion of their business with revenue from the on-line version.  I can imagine that if some simply let the print versions die, then the need for the excessive number of ads will drop.

(Although, if they see their profits spike, they ads will become even more obnoxious.)
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.
