Regular tie or bow tie for job interview?
« on: March 13, 2017, 03:43:15 PM »
I am going to go chat tomorrow with a local healthcare facility about a position as their quality and risk director and they do not know me.  I wear business attire (dress shirt, tie, suit or sportcoat/dress slacks) every work day, and about half the time, I wear a bow tie.  Being the risk manager often has a somewhat grim connotation with it in healthcare since people often think something awful has happened or will happen when I show up.  Many people have said the bow tie makes me look less scary and more approachable.

This is front of an interview panel of providers, medical directors and other executives.

Not an expert but I would go with a normal necktie.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Ditto a "regular" necktie. Business dress for a business meeting. Save the bow tie for formal affairs.

Totally get your "approachability" reasoning for patients, but I would go with a conservative regular tie for the interview.

We need more information. Are your bow ties the stationary type, or do they spin? Because I would be most impressed by an applicant who sported the latter.

Also, please provide any risk assessments you've prepared for the various options.

Regular tie.  Don't risk a bow tie.  :)

I did one interview with a western bolo tie, but that was back when Colorado was Colorado and Terry was Terry and even our Senators wore them.

Nowadays they're <ahem, koff-koff> deplorable.

Good luck, in any case.

Bowtie ONLY if you wear a white linen suite and have a beard and moustache like Harlan Sanders.

And take fried chicken with you.

Conservative neck tie unless part of your duties would include serving as an irritating mime.

That is both over-redundant and repetitive.

Bow tie only if you're going for the absent minded professor look.
A former ceo of a multinational manufacturing company told me he always looked at thier shoes when interviewing upper management. He said what they wear and more importantly how they care for them told him a lot.

Yeah, I'd really want to hire this guy.

And here's a prominent Senator playing another prominent Senator . . . not much gravitas here.

My advice? Stick to a conventional necktie for an interview.

Traditional neck tie.  Odds are good there will be a lawyer or two lawyers on the panel.  Dress like one.

So long as it fits you, go for the bow tie. It can show confidence in yourself.

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

He at least used to live in the general vicinity.  Not any more apparently.  He was an engineer at Boeing before he got on TV.
