The PA Turnpike (76) is very good road now as opposed to the piece of crap it used to be.

Wow.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I took it from Camp Hill to Ohio a less than 3 years ago and it couldn't have sucked WORSE, especially at night.

The itermedian barriers are angled such that the lights from oncoming traffic bounce off and glare right into your eyes. The road surface is smoother than the pothole hell it used to be, but it's still very nasty in long stretches, it's exceedingly poorly lit along long stretches...

I'd still recommend avoiding it.

Okay I've almost got it figured
I70 to PA...how's Highway 40 through PA into Maryland?  Either that or I79 to I68, to I81 to I66.  Thoughts?

Dunno about the first route, but if you take I81 to I66, take exit 44 to Wellington Rd.  Turn left onto Wellington (when you pass the big Methodist church on the right, look to your left and wave hi to me) and take that to the Prince William Parkway to Woodbridge.

I'd say use Interstate 68. It handily lets you avoid I76.

One possible route, although a bit circuititous (sp?), is 68 to 70 to 270 to 495 to 66 to Manassas.

Good roads all of the way.

You could also to 68 to 70 to 270 to 340 to 15, but once you get onto 15 towards Point of Rocks the road becomes 2/3 lane and is quite windy. It's also a little confusing around Leesburg, but Mtnbkr can probably get you in. We took that route a couple of years ago coming back from a shoot in Pennsylvania.

The Rt15 route can be quite scenic.  FWIW, Point of Rocks is my favorite entry point to the C&O Canal Towpath.  If the weather's nice that day, if you come by that area during the day, and aren't in a hurry, PoR is a good area to stop, have picnic, and enjoy the scenery on the Potomac.

The drive down 15 all the way down to Route 50 can be quite beautiful depending on the time of year.

You go through a number of very quaint towns and past some really nice open areas.

It can also be quite treacherous at times due to wind gusts.

When I moved from CO to VA I took I-70, using the outerbelts around St. Louis, Indy and Columbus.  I-70 onto the turnpike to Breezewood, down 270 to the 395 around DC to 95.

I run NoVA to Columbus Ohio or Pittsburgh on a regular basis.  I've had no trouble at all running the PA Turnpike.  I think the toll from Washington PA to Breezewood is around $10.  I can generally run the entire route at about 10 over the limit with no trouble.  My SO runs it at about 15 over.

The only caution is to watch your arrival time.  You have got to be around 395 no later than about 2:00 pm or you'll hit awful traffic on 95 S.  After 7:00 pm it seems to break up, unless there's a wreck, or rain, or sunshine, or snow, or clouds.  103.5 FM has traffic reports  "on the 8s".

Last week I ran a bit late, hit I-95 at 3:00 pm and traveled the last 40 miles of my trip in 2 hours.  I was coming down with an awful stomach flu, so you can imagine what a nightmare it was.

Yuck.  I think I'll avoid 395 and 95, I'll probably slice across the top of the state instead.

I can't see why he'd want to try to use 395/95.

Takes him too far south from where he's coming.

That toll is actually to New Stanton PA. Washington is about 40 miles west of the turnpike on I70

Thanks.  I couldn't remember the exact start of the Pike on I-70 because I've been detouring to just north of Pgh my past several times through.

Oops, forgot that he's going to "true" NoVA.
