The Mahindra Roxor is coming
« on: March 02, 2018, 03:58:16 PM »
http://www.foxnews.com/auto/2018/03/02/mahindra-roxor-is-retro-off-roader-dreams-as-long-as-stay-off-road.html

I remember reading about Mahindra a few years back, when they were thinking of bringing a small/mid-size pickup truck to the US.  They are the largest builder of tractors in the world and make a lot of cars in India.

Not street legal in the U.S., so I don't foresee a lot of sales.

I wouldn't even care about that if the thing were street legal. It would make a good, basic Sunday go to huntin' and fishin' ride.

Mahindra makes a lot of stuff that could have a decent US "no frills" market, except stuff like this jeep isn't street legal, and their tractors aren't actually all that cheap. In fact, IMO, this "jeep" should be five grand less considering its limitations.

I guess they come by the Jeep thing honestly.

The tiny truck looks like a Jeep CJ, and it’s no coincidence. Mahindra got its start as a carmaker building licensed Willys Jeeps after World War 2 and has been evolving it ever since. It’s like a parallel universe to America’s Jeep.

Look at all those rails and roll-bars and things. You can have a lot of people clinging to the outside of one of these cars.

Given the unreliability of electrics in their tractors, they must have learned electrical system design from Lucas.

They were a licensed manufacturer of Willys GPs back in the day.

Also, thus is a UTV, not a full-size car.

Ah.  Wasn't aware of that.  Thought it was a bit ballsy to copy the Willys look for some foreign company.

Agreed. I would enthusiastically say "WANT!!!" except for the price.

Mahindra also makes some kind of a Range Rover-ish vehicle that's popular in my late wife's native country. I saw a lot of them on the streets when I was there.

I agree that it's more than I would pay, but a quick glance at the John Deere site shows a diesel Gator with less payload and towing is going to set you back 14.5.

So maybe they got their market ...

Looks like Mahindra also makes a road-legal version called the Thar. I wonder if they plan to import that?

Supposedly their Tractors are actually quite good in many ways. The Roxor is interesting in the same vein, the competition from JD, Kubota, etc. is not exactly equivalent. Mahindra does make if I recall correctly an actual competitor to those manufacturers utility vehicle products. This might actually be a different product. I personally however would be much more interested in a faithful quality reproduction of the original Jeep that was reasonably priced and could be used on the road legally.

Wasn't a Hilux the truck that Top Gear couldn't kill? Granted that was an older one. I wish we could get these in the US.

The Mahindra tractors are made, maybe assembled is more correct in the US at least for the US market. Supposed to be decent Tractors.

No.  At least not to current US definitions of quality.  They probably make better cars than Russia, though.  Probably.
