It's about the veteran's continuing desire to serve.  Something my ex- never understood when I volunteered to be a coach for my kid's teams or help at the American Legion (and serve on it's Colour Guard), become President of the Aurora Sportsmen's Club, and of course, Boy Scouts.  She couldn't grasp why.   Most vets have that inner drive to serve, even long after we've taken off the uniform...

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Your ex isn't the only one, most people who have never been a part of the military can't grasp that concept. After I finished Nursing school I explored going back on active duty even though I had retired 7 years earlier as a CPO. My wife thought I had slipped a gear or two.

Even now, approaching Medicare age rapidly I would go back and serve.

It's what we do.
