Maid-Rites
« on: October 10, 2017, 10:23:07 AM »
Another easy meal that I discovered my children love:

Cook hamburger (loose) with onions and some garlic.

Drain.

Serve (loose) on bun with preferred condiments. (Most of my children want ketchup, except for the 3 year old who loves mustard. I prefer mustard and a few pickles.)

That's it.

Midwesterners will recognize this recipe. It's a little messy, but easy and tasty.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Not so much.

I'd never heard of the chain until Alton Brown did his first Feasting on Asphalt some years ago and visited the Maid-Rite in Iowa.

Make your way up to Hannibal and expand your horizons.

I can't recall if the location I first had one at as a child was a knock-off or part of the chain. In any case, it's long since closed.

Not so much.

Yep missing salt and pepper, and adding beef broth after draining beef grease.

My hometown of Burlington, IA had 8 maid-rite joints at one time, I think it still has 5.

It's more or less a variation on the Sloppy Joe, from what I can figure out, but without the tomato sauce base.

It will be the first full weekend in October in 2018, he has 363 days to plan, and for me to escape that part of the state if he arrives.

Nope, Maid-Rite is actually trademarked. So the non Maid-Rite dinners called them loose meat sandwiches.
If you venture into NW Iowa they are called Taverns, because most of the bars used to serve them everyday. In Sioux City, IA they are called Charlie Boys.

pulled meat (Pork, chicken, turkey) is totally different.

I think, around here, we call them "somebody don't know how to make a hamburger patty."

That, or like the Meers Burger, in Meers OK of course. The longorn beef burgers just fall apart. Lack of fat or other binder? Probably not as loose as the loose meat sammich though.

That's why I had the bison burger when I was there.
