Looking at a cold, dark night
« on: October 30, 2017, 08:01:18 PM »
We had a line of storms go through last night, and at 10:40 p.m. my power went out. I wasn't alone -- there were thousands of people out, all around the state. I saw in the news this morning that one entire town was out -- 100 percent! It's now 8:00 p.m., 22 hours later, and most places have their power back. I don't. I'm hiding out in a McDonald's, using their free WiFi to connect.

Not a happy camper.

I have power only because I have a whole house generator.  I don’t have the interwebs though, as those lines are physically down, too.  Luckily, the cellular network still runs.

My town was 77% out now we are around 60% out.

Saw where over 1 million were affected up that way.
WTF?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

High winds and lots of trees near power lines.

Regionally, power is coming back. Hasn't reached me, though. In fact, they're going backward. An hour ago, the power company web site showed 76 customers w/o power in my town. Five minutes ago it was UP to 79. WTF?

Rerouting during restoration will frequently knock additional areas out as they isolate sections of the grid for repair.

Here in central CT, we were without power for 8 hours.  Back in 2011, I was in the dark for nine days.  If not for my ability to access my base, I might have been challenged to take regular showers, or charge my electronics.

During that incident, my greatest concern was watching my gas tank slowly deplete.  It was interesting to see how word-of-mouth was important in finding gas stations that were open and selling.  I ended up going to Springfield, MA and waiting in line for 45 minutes, but I refueled successfully.

Power was restored at 10:15 p.m. -- eleven and a half hours after it went out. Could have been worse.

[Edit]Correction: 23-1/2 hours, not 11-1/2.
