Cubebs

I'm reading Robert Ruark's "The Old Man and the Boy" for the umptyumph time and again ran across how his gramma Miss Lottie did not abide pipe smokin' by the Old Man in the house.  She did, however, have a stash of Cubebs she had for her "chest troubles".  The Boy said that he'd "broke in on a Cubeb at an early age."

That reminded me of when my dad was quitting smoking his Winston's when I was young.  He had a bunch of Cubebs stashed that I happened to stumble across.  I guess I got "broke in on a Cubeb at an early age" too.  I often wondered what my Old Man wondered about why his stash was slowly depleting.

I have an idea not too many on this forum would even know what a Cubeb was.

dried crushed unripe berry from the pepper family.  They used them to flavor tobacco but also made cigarettes out of them.
