Make your own euthanasia machine
« on: December 05, 2017, 10:51:37 AM »
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/216655/20171205/doctor-created-3d-printed-euthanasia-machine-that-can-end-life-painlessly.htm

I wonder when the files for this will hit the Net. A device that uses liquid nitrogen to asphyxiate the person inside.

That would be "suffocate," no?

"Asphyxiate" means to die from breathing a poison, I think.

"Suffocate" means to die from not having enough oxygen.

Asphyxiate mean to kill someone by depriving them of air (O2), I think this fits the bill. At least that is how I recall it.

as·phyx·i·ate
əˈsfiksēˌāt/Submit
verb
kill (someone) by depriving them of air.
"they were asphyxiated by the carbon monoxide fumes"
synonyms:   choke (to death)

AUTHOR:   Lewis Carroll (1832–98)
QUOTATION:   “When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.” “The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.” “The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master—that’s all.”

The way I loint it, "depriving them of air" was suffocation.  Asphyxiation was disrupting (poisoning) the body's ability to process the oxygen in the air.

Thus, carbon monoxide does not suffocate, carbon monoxide asphyxiates by poisoning the hemoglobin.  Carbon dioxide suffocates but does not asphyxiate.

I strongly suspect this is another case of misuse of a word (in this case, two words) which has resulted in corrupted definitions promulgated by the internet.

Anyhow, that's the way I learned the difference between the two, wayyyy before the internet.

Sorry, but popular corruption of meanings (especially on the internet) has been kind of a bugaboo with me lately, so if I'm wrong, then I'm wrong in my current usage of the two words.

In the legal and clinical contexts, two worlds with which I am quite familiar, 'suffocation' generally refers to the mechanical blockage of air into the lungs, such as with a pillow, hands or debris.

Compare and contrast this to 'asphyxiation' is left as an exercise to the reader.

Can I send it as a gift from Amazon?

I'm wondering why you need a machine.  A cylinder of nitrogen, a tube, and a mask should be all that is required.

That said, follow to the source: https://thenextweb.com/gadgets/2017/12/05/literal-death-machine-offers-way-peacefully-slip-existence/

That's going to take a HUGE 3D printer, and a really fancy one capable of differing materials at that.

I'm going to say that the 3D part is just trying to hang something special on the machine.  It's most likely to be made by hand or press.

Messy.  Think of the poor innocent person who discovers your remains or has to clean it up.

Indeed.  With the capsule they can just haul you off.

Good point.

Revised design: Coffin with tubing and cylinder of nitrogen.  Set up a regulator to keep a constant flow into the coffin to displace the air.

Pretty sure that's the machine in the OP.

Which is why I have already chosen the perfect location:  High ceilings so the splatter doesn't hit it, concrete floors for easy washing, and wide aisles to accommodate gurneys or skid-steers.  Just have to find an aisle that hasn't been pooped in.

It would help if I read the link.
