Pay $1 Million to See Again?
« on: January 04, 2018, 11:23:24 AM »
Another of my "TV topics" with no link, but just saw a news segment about a procedure (some kind of gene therapy) that can reverse blindness in some cases, at a cost of ~$850K. Would you pay it? I would, if I could come up with the money, if I had to sell everything I owned, if I had to go into debt, if I had to end up living in a plywood shack in the desert and go back to work at my age and dig ditches. I would do it if it were $2 million.

Blindness is one of my bugaboos. I know many people overcome it and lead productive lives, but I'm not sure I could. Being able to see, even if I had to wear coke bottle glasses, is a very important "quality of life" issue for me. Others might feel that they could live with blindness, using the nearly $1 million to support themselves for the rest of their lives.

What would you do?

Can't argue with that.  I would find a way to get it done.

Same here.  Could not abide being blind.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

I dunno; just think how much money you could save by not caring what a woman's face looks like.

Yeah you would need the $1m to have them be with you.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

My father was blind, other then not being able to drive, he did okay.  Plus you can get away with quite a bit.  (If Al Franken was blind, he still be in the Senate. ;) )
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.
