The man was 76, he had long ago quit playing music, and you didn't know him. So, I'm curious, why his death affects you so much.

Mr. Thomas made music that was a large part of the soundtrack to my teen and college years. I have very fond memories of events that occurred while Moody Blues music was playing. That's what he is to me, part and parcel to my memories.
If someone told me that you had passed away I'd likely say exactly the same thing, even though realistically it would mean far less to me, and be far more abstract.
