My cousins from down south (they lived in a southern suburb of Chicago) called it "soda", and they drank from a "water fountain".

I live close to Milwaukee, thus I live between between Green Bay and Chicago, and my family has always called it "soda," not "pop," and "bubbler," not "drinking fountain." Half 'n half.  grin

"You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop." No, No and NO!!  angry

Inland North. I grew up in Maine and have lived in VA, NV, MT and have never been accused of having an accent.
BTW, it's soda and a water fountain.

Dead on for me.  Midland- I've lived in SE Missouri, Southern Illinois, and Ohio most of my life.

Florida... now that is one more confusing state. The Southern part of the state is the north end where all the Southern people live. Get down as far as Ft. Lauderdale and you're back up North.

The Midland.

Pretty different considering I was born and raised in WV and talked like Jed Clampett on quaaludes. Of course I left there when I was 18 and ended up traveling and living around the world before landing in Alaska.
