Got my first paycheck under the new rules. Up just shy of $80. I like my crumbs.

HA! $84.64 here! SUCK IT, I GOT 5% more!  [ar15]

I didn't think ours was kicking in before February, but looking at December vs. January, looks like we did get a bump. An extra $1000 per year is very nice.

I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Anyone hearing anything from the Dems about yesterday "prooving" that Trump's tax plan is bad for the economy and that's why the markets collapsed?

If not, I'm sure that we will very soon.

At 10K, it would be a collapse (and I'd be hocking stuff and selling blood to invest every penny I could). At 26K, it's a correction or blip.

It is if you're a Democrat desperate to spin it any way you can so that Republicans and Trump suck and are destroying your personal economy.

The only political explanation I've heard was that it was connected to the release of the much-ballyhooed Memo.

Adjusted the W4 from 11 to 13 which added $46 to my last paycheck.  Next one (Feb 9) will include the new rates.  We shall see.  According to a couple online tax apps I should only owe $600-1000 for 2018, so I may adjust the W4 again depending on what withholding looks like.

Yep.  Took that into account.  Child tax credit also doubled.

So did mine.   But he turns 18 in Nov 2018, so she doesn't get it anymore.   Oh, the other fun thing.  My ex pays me maintenance (formerly know as "alimony").  That's no longer an income adjustment for her, nor taxable to me.

I got a nice little bump in my last paycheck. I think I'd have an easier time enjoying it if my kid wasn't gonna have to pay for it though. =(
The government plans to borrow nearly $1 trillion this fiscal year, an 84 percent increase compared to the previous fiscal year

Yes, let's keep giving as much money to the government as possible, so they can responsibly pay down the debt. It worked last time.

I agree with you.  Cutting taxes without cutting spending at this point doesn't seem reasonable.  Unfortunately, if the gov were to cut one cent, they would be damned for trying to starve little children to death.  So the Republican party apparently has given up even pretending to care about the deficit.

Who said anything about paying down the debt?!? I'd be happy with eliminating the deficit, or heck just reducing it.
But nope! There's one thing everyone can agree on: MORE SPENDING.

Or Janet Yellen seriously whacking Wells-Fargo (which is a component of the Dow).

Yellen's bitter comments on her way out the door sure didn't help.

It's my opinion that Trump's biggest mistake upon taking office was that he didn't do a thorough enough house cleaning. He should have kicked every one of Obama's appointees to the curb and put his own people in.
2nd biggest mistake was listening to whoever told him to appoint GOP establishment people like Rance Priebus to his admin.

The memo was part of it, but it was much deeper than that... there were jitters about interest rates, about the government possibly shutting down again, and quite a few other indicators that all ganged up to make people very, very nervous.

Reducing the deficit doesn't help much ... it's still a deficit. Any deficit at all means the .gov spends more than it earns, which increases the debt. And what's needed is to eliminate (or, at least, significantly reduce) the debt. The problem is the debt -- the deficit is just the way we get (and increase) the debt.

What the .gov is doing is effectively the same thing as if every month instead of paying the balance due on your Visa card you only make the minimum payment. Do that, and it won't be long before that balance grows to a level you don't even dare look at.
