Concealed carry by state
« on: February 24, 2019, 01:26:04 PM »
The Washington Times has an interesting slide show that purports to rank the states for their friendliness toward concealed carry.

https://www.washingtontimes.com/multimedia/collection/best-concealed-carry-handgun-states-ranked/

My state is near the bottom of the heap, of course, but I knew that. They don't offer any information on how they arrived at their rankings and one could easily argue that any particular state might move up or down a few notches but, overall, it's a handy chart. I looked at it with interest because I'm considering relocating and 2A concerns are high on my list. Thus, for example, beautiful New Mexico is not on my list. States that I have been considering are all quite a bit higher than my state.

There is no training requirement in Washington state, I pay $ 49 for a five year concealed pistol license, and bars, schools, courthouses and some governmental buildings are prohibited carry places.  Washington recognizes reciprocity with only ten other states, but a Washington and Utah permit pretty much allow me to carry anywhere I am likely to go, with the notable exception of Oregon. No reciprocity by Oregon and you have to hunt to find a county sheriff who will issue a permit to a non-resident of Oregon.

Oklahoma is looking like we'll get constitutional carry this session.
Of course we are getting all the usual Wild, wild West" and "blood in the streets" lamentations just like when CCW was passed and when open carry was allowed.

I'm surprised Indiana isn't in the top 5.  $25 for a 5 year license, $125 for lifetime.  No training requirement, and they recognize permits from anywhere in the known universe.  Open carry is legal.  Very few restricted places (I think just the Federal ones).   I've even open carried in taverns and sat at the bar.

Idaho was also lower than I expected. Unlicensed state concealed carry (which they didn't mention) and you can even go into a bar and have a beer.

I've always thought the "no establishments that serve alcohol" thing was kinda dumb. If I can drive to the bar to legally have one glass of whiskey or one beer and drive home, the same should apply for guns. Especially if you're just going to some pub for a burger and a beer, or even a burger and glass of water, since in many states you can't even enter the establishment even if you just order water. Plus in those cases, how many people are leaving their guns at home versus locked in their cars?

If you catch me over the legal limit for driving while I'm carrying, take away my permit, just like you'd take away my license. Otherwise let me be an adult.

They apparently believe that Missouri cities can ban carry, so they gave it a pretty bad rating. I believe what they're referring to is that cities can ban open carry (doesn't apply if you've a carry permit). We also allow open or concealed carry w/o a permit, and recognize every state's permits.

#34: LOUISIANA. High marks for strong stand-your-ground statutes, but fees are considerably higher than average. Also, no guns around alcohol or parades.

At least we have the ability to Open Carry without fees or permits.

Isn't that true in most states?

Absolutely not.

Maybe you were thinking of concealed carry. The Hog and I were talking about open carry. The map in the link below says 30 states allow open carry w/o a permit.

Anyone see where they rank Texas?  I don't want to click through all those pages.

I was looking at maybe driving up the NRA show in April.  Main thing I figured out was to avoid passing through Illinois.  Other than that, Texas has reciprocity with every state including Indiana.  It was great to see that.

I was thinking of open carry. 30 states is more than half, but nowhere near what I would call "most" of 50 states plus D.C. If 30 states allow open carry (without license/permit), that means 20 states (plus Washington, DC) don't.

I've always thought most was synonymous with "more than half." The dictionaries I've been looking at seem to be split on the question, so perhaps you're right.

Three out of five is close enough for what I meant to say.

My experience with Connecticut hasn't been that bad, but I already had my non-resident permit when I moved here from New Hampshire.  I never had to obtain a town permit first, which colloquially is usually the most difficult part of the process.
