Mixed feelings about this new forum
« on: March 03, 2005, 06:34:05 PM »
On the one hand I'm glad that some friendly faces will be here and that we might make this into something special.  Lets hope that that is what happens.

On the other hand, being totally honest, part of me thinks that this forum is nothing more than an appeasement  to those of us who thought that the Roundtable was a valuable part of The High Road and vociferously expressed a desire for it to continue.

If the answer to the Roundtable going away is to just start another forum altogether, why not start one that is run by people that will consult with the 'members' of the forum before making decisions in a relative vacuum and then kicking the members in their rear ends (and their hearts) with their edicts?

I'm sorry, Oleg, but I predict that this forum will die a slow but steady death.  I hope to be proven wrong and to have to extend a public mea culpa (which would make me VERY happy), but that is just not what my heart is telling me.

Long live The High Road.

why not start

An excellent question. Do start. There's room for many forums on the web.

I just don't see the point. A couple people caused some trouble in a few topics and the RT gets moved to a new board with LESS moderation? Not to mention that it means I'll have to keep a totally new window open on a slow computer.

The way I see it, APS will grow and remain strong in membership. The Roundtable is history. High Roaders will come here for Roundtable type discussion. It's not that big of a deal.

Who knows...maybe APS will take on a life of its own.  Perhaps we'll see multiple fora here, instead of a catch-all Round Table?  A car forum, a computer forum, etc.  Pure speculation, mind you.

I've been foruming for a long time ... forums come and forums go, and new forums sometimes die.

But this forum has the advantage of a huge jumpstart so I have a good feeling about it.

I choose to remain positive ... Thanks Oleg  Cheesy

You know, when I read the title, "Armed Polite Society," I had visions of each member having a vote in everyone else's posts.

If a member received too high a percentage of negative "votes," then they would temporarily be banned from posting. Second offense, a longer ban, etc. Then, after say, three-strikes, the option to vote to ban permanently would be available to all the other members.

And maybe votes could have more weight depending on how many posts someone has or how long they have been registered.

I realize that such a system would probably be wraught with problems, but those are the kind of visions I had when I read the title.

It would have been like we, the members, were all armed and therefore would remain polite and civil to one another less be get too many demerits.

In any case, I'm glad and thankful to Oleg for giving us yet another chance to save ourselves.

Thanks again Oleg.

I really do appreciate it.

For those in the know, will there be a link from THR to this "new" RT?

Just curious..

The link is in my announcement within THR's Roundtable. When that goes away, you will already know the path. Nothing to stop people from linking heir taglines or personal sites to the new RT.

michigander, i've been on message boards that have a similar type of setup.
each member was given 'karma points', and the individual would choose to give them anonymously to other members. you get a little icon that indicates where your karma is at. if you get enough negative karma you lose the ability to post messages.

a good idea in theory, but just about everyone only dished out negative karma. you also earned member points, kind of like the 'junior member', 'member', and 'senior member' you see on other boards. each new rank you achieve brought more karma points to give out.

turns out topics of firearms earned me a lot of negative karma.

that system just doesnt work because inevitably people fall into the mob mentality.t hey stop making good decisions and go along with whatever everyone else is doing, whether for good or for bad.

the only thing i worry about for this new forum is that some of the whiners will make too many headaches for hte one moderator to handle.

some people just always have to find ways to get offended. i had hoped that this trait was only limited to PAB liberals, but now i see that even normal people are afflicted with it as well.

Perhaps Oleg will restart the Roundtable at THR at some point in the future if this forum works out. If not, it's just the net afterall, not real life.

Is there a way to transfer the files from RT over here?  While there was plenty of chaff, the wheat that was in there made some incredible bread.  It's silly just to toss it all away.

(and yes I know that I can go in & individually save threads to my computer.  However what I don't know is (for instance) that my mother is going to need a specific type of surgery tomorrow (and thus wouldn't have saved that thread) & now I won't have the benefit of everyone's collective yesterday's experience (without everyone who bothered to come over here typing it all in again).

In the information age it just seems strange to permanently delete good information.

Looking into the info transfer. However, this particular forum software may be a temporary solution.

Lucky you WA!

I think this forum will do fine. We kept the RT going with such random stuff and helpful stuff. And with the strict punishments for abuse, it should keep people in line, if not, we should be better for it.

I too am appreciative that we have been given a place to play....

However - the sudden and 'final' way that RT was eliminated, the dubious reasoning that a nearly unmoderated forum here will somehow have less problems than a well moderated one there, and the fact that we were shunted to this place without so much as a permenant link over on 'our home' (THR) leaves me feeling like this place is more of a Ghetto where the 'THR undesireables' are 'allowed' to retreat to if they still want to do anything but talk shop.

I could not agree more... I have very mixed feelings about this.

If this is a ghetto, why do I hang around here myself? APS was designed to let THR concentrate on its primary objective while providing a fun hangout for us.

Abrupt? Call it purposeful. I had an idea and implemented it. I called you for advice but you were out, so I just had to act. Hope you enjoy this venue.

The one thing I really liked about having the Round Table on THR was that I could just click on "New Posts" and they would already be mixed in with the other new posts.  It broke up the posts some so that there was a mixture of gun and non-gun posts to read.

I belong to a number of forums that I go into every day.  Guess I'll just add this one in.  I do agree that I liked it better the other way, but I'll give this a try and see if it lasts.

I also agree that it's a shame that a few bad apples ruined the whole thing for us.

Don't understand the complaints.

THR and now this are Oleg's babies -- he can run them any way he pleases.

If you don't like it, start your own forum.

Thanks for everything you do for us Oleg.  Yor ARE appreciated by the vast majority out here, even if we forget to say so often enough.

Carry on!!

The APS is different then TRT, that is simple to see, and that's cool... consider, there may have been problems beyond our knowledge, with the round table. Like anything, this forum will be, what WE make it, and is not about the attitudes of "me,my,mine" or ones personal convenience. If we all are here to share, our views and stories, and add to the quality of the forum, to see our similarities as opposed to take from the forum and fight, and focus on our differences .... then this new clan and forum will have a good and growing future. If you wish change, be that change... after the first step, its easy.  My hats are off to Olga... your solution was one of wisdom and honor....
Peace be the Journey......
