Ahhh. currywurst. Oh how I miss your Roadside Imbiss goodness. Curry ketchup dizzled all over the sliced wurst (with a sprinkle of yellow curry on top) and pommes frites with little cups of ketchup and mayo all in a oversized hot dog tray, add a can of Spezi, and for a couple Marks you hqve a filling, delicious, hot meal when you are out in the field in miserable weather.
*sigh*
After all these years, I hit the jackpot. Every place I've ever lived, if there (rarely) was a German store, they always had the items shipped there vs making anything themselves, and they never stayed in business long. Then I had to settle for ordering at a high price from germandeli.com, who had lots of stuff, but last year, also went out of business.
Jut last month, I discovered a recently opened German store (run by a Romanian couple) just 30 minutes away, and they make all their own sausage (including currywurst) and also bake fresh bread every day. Really good bread. I haven't baked bread since I discovered them. They also have a small lunch deli going, and just got their wild game processing license.
And I owe it all to marijuana.
Last week when I told her how happy I was that they were there, she told me their whole story. They were successfully doing business in Portland for 15 years. Then one day last year, a guy came into her store asking about rent costs and saying he'd sure like a space in the building whenever one opened up. Being friendly, she gave him the whole rundown. A few days later, her landlord came in and said he was raising the rent from $5500 to $10,000/mo and she could meet it or leave. They couldn't afford it, so they left. The guy she talked to moved in the next month and opened a pot shop. Turned out he told the owner he'd pay the ten grand to get a space in the building.
Their loss was my gain. They bought the building they're in now, and they're getting 5 star Google reviews, so hopefully they'll be in business for a long while and making Ben happy with food from the fatherland.
