Humorous movies
« on: February 17, 2007, 06:08:43 PM »
I've recently noticed that my movie/video collection is in dire need of humor. Not because I don't like humor, it's just that most humor movies are bad enough for me to be embarassed to have them on my shelf. I need movies featuring sophisticated humor, black humor, unintentional humor, or else are just plain funny. For example, I think super troopers is great, because it's funny enough to not care about the actual movie. Ditto with some Monty Python material. But I simply find most 'comedy' movies (say, Wedding Crashers) painful. I think The Princess Bride has a lot of humor, but somehow manages to be good at the same time. What are some good, classic funny movies?

No DVD collection is complete without Caddyshack, Animal House, Young Frankenstein, and Blazing Saddles.

With most modern comedies I find I watch them once, laugh, and never watch them again...  I loved 40 Year Old Virgin, for example, but I don't think I'd really ever bother to watch it a second time.  Same with Borat or Anchorman.

If I had to think of a bunch of classics that are funny... "Father Goose" (1964) just came to mind... it was a different kind of role for Cary Grant. "McLintock" made my list and so did "The Quiet Man", both of which co-star John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara... the former having been noted for a romantic comedy type of western while the latter is a solid drama with plenty of humor. I'm sure some more will come to me.

Get both Jackass movies.  I don't care what type of humor you have, there's always at least one part of them movies that will make you laugh.

The important criteria is not that the movie be funny...but that it be replayably funny. The second seems to be a much harder criteria.

Kung Fu Hustle is by far the funniest damn thing I've ever seen.

Just when you think it's taken the chop socky genre to it's absolute most twisted bitter end, it does it again.  And then tops that.  And then tops THAT.  And then...

Smiley

Believe it or not, the second funniest thing I've ever seen on film is "Kill Bill" - both parts.  For about the same reason...

Another vote for Lost In America.

I'll add a few.
Fargo, not exactly a comedy, but many funny parts.
Ruthless People
Cars, if you like cartoon movies.

Add to that list:

Bringing Up Baby - Watching Cary Grant dash about in frilly house-coat and exclaim "I've suddenly gone gay" is a screamer.
South Park: The Movie - 'Prolly the best comedic musical in 10 years.
The Gods Must Be Crazy - White mans trash causes all sorts of chaos in a Bushman group
Les Visiteurs, Les Visiteurs II and Just Visiting - 12th Century French Knight in the modern world.
Army of Darkness - What can be said? "Good.  Bad.  I'm the guy with the gun."
I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou...if you like a drier, sharp-witted sort of humor. I do.  grin

"Down Periscope" is one that we enjoy watching over and over.

"Galaxy Quest" is pretty good (unless you are a "trekkie" with no sense of humor)

"The Gods Must Be Crazy" - haven't seen that in a long time but looking to add it to our video collection.  That one really gets to me because I have actually done some things like that (old trucks/jeeps and stretch gates  grin)

The others that I would have mentioned except someone else did it first:
Princess Bride
McLintock
The Quiet Man

I'm a "Trekkie", or more appropriately, a "Trekker", and I laughed my way through "Galaxy Quest".  It's fun to have your favorite ox gored once in awhile.
I'd vote for McLintock and The Quiet Man, too.

Try "The Whole Nine Yards" with Bruce Willis, Matthew Perry, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Amanda Peet.  A real good shot of Amanda Peet.
Fer cryin' out loud, Hungarian mobsters. How can such a thing as Hungarian mobsters exist?  Did I mention Amanda Peet?
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

One of the funnest(it is also funny) movies I've seen in the  last few years is Secondhand Lions.
It has parts that are funny, serious, quirky, and just plain enjoyable.
I don't know why it didn't get more press when it came out but everyone I know who has seen it has enjoyed it immensely.
