Smollett?

Allegedly it was to get more publicity so the studio would pay him more for his role in Empire.

There is also a take that he had received a threatening letter and the studio didn't take it as seriously as he thought they should, so the attack was to "prove" that he was in peril. There was suspicion that he actually sent the threatening letter to himself.

I hate the term "hate crime" to begin with, but would argue that staging one should get the same punishment as the real thing. If you're into considering "hate crimes" valid.

150 days in jail.

Also, there's another video halfway down the page where Smollett goes off on a "I am not suicidal" rant.
