RIP. My understanding is that he had Alzheimer's or another dementia issue? Supposedly going on for years. He seemed like a nice guy, so I'm glad he's at least not suffering through that anymore.

Somewhere in the darkness,  the gambler he broke even...
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

He was hospitalized last year for bladder cancer and liver damage (complications of hep-c).

Helluva singer and seemed a truly nice guy. RIP.

Loved his music.

I caught part of a really nice memorial show to him on CMT last night.

The one thing that amused me was that he said "I never thought I was a very good singer. But I do think I had a talent for picking great songs."

Can't argue with either one of those statements.

Somewhere in the darkness,  the gambler he broke even...
I had to go dig up that verse.
Quote
And when he finished speakin'
He turned back toward the window
Crushed out his cigarette
And faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness
The gambler he broke even
But in his final words
I found an ace that I could keep
That was a HUGE song when I was a kid.  TV movies made of that one.  Same with Coward of the County.

Saw him in person at Pueblo Memorial Hall back about 1968.  He was trying to be a rock star back then (and doing a pretty good job of it).  Part of our student fees subsidized concerts and I think this one cost $1.50 per person.  I remember him as very personable and he put on a very good show.

This was popular about that time - "I Just Dropped in":

IMO, he was a better fit as a country star, but he was pretty good at either.

RIP, Kenny
