Portable Induction Burner
« on: May 13, 2020, 12:34:05 PM »
Anyone have a portable induction burner?

Woot has one on sale for a good price right now. I've been thinking about getting one for awhile. It would be useful to have when grilling outside in the summer heat and it would also allow me to get more use out of my cast iron cookware, which I don't use on my glass top stove.

Pros? Cons?

Yes and I love mine. Got it on Amazon around four years ago and use it almost every day. I have a propane range, and while I use the burners for some stuff, I like that the induction cooktop heats the whole bottom of the pan versus just the center. I do a lot of vegetable steaming on it because I can set the timer and not have to worry about watching stuff.

I'm sure you know this, but they can be picky about pans. I had to buy a couple of new stainless pots when I got it because the old ones weren't recognized by it. Zero problems with cast iron or carbon steel of course.

This is the one I have, no longer available. Fifty ducats at the time:

I have had a Nu Wave for years use it several times a week. It came with. Skillet and a pan but I mostly use my cast iron on it.

It has to be over 10 years old and just this spring the touch pad started acting up. Still works just have to play with it sometimes.

I have this and yes it is great on a patio with cast iron grill pan.  I've also taken it to school.

I have one, and something that may be a concern is the thermal cut-out.  I originally bought my induction burner to use outside to roast coffee.  Roasting coffee requires high temperatures for approximately 15-20 minutes or so.  I discovered that the induction burner would shut down due to overheating, so I had to give it up for coffee roasting.  If you are not using the induction burner for high heat and prolonged use, it will be fine.

Interesting. I've never had mine cut out. I use it for cooking rice (it always comes out better than on the stove) but that's 20 minutes at a low setting. In fact I find for what I do on mine, I never use the highest setting except to maybe get water boiling fast or something, then turn it down. Or like I cooked corn cobs today, so high setting till the water boiled, then down to midrange for 10 minutes, else on high it will boil over.

I've been thinking about getting a 1800W single-burner cooktop, but most of my cookware is 30+ year old RevereWare.  Has anyone tried it on an induction burner?  It's the stainless steel stuff with the copper bottom.  A magnet does not stick to it, which I know is a bad sign but might not necessarily mean it won't work (paramagnetism, or something like that.)

I have just enough cast iron and carbon steel cookware I might get one anyway, but not being able to use any of my saucepans would be a real bummer.  (I'm almost sure the Calphalon hard anodized aluminum won't work, that's my one other good saucepan)

I have one piece of Revereware.

It does not even twitch on my induction burner. Doesn't even get remotely warm.

So, I'm going to say that you're going to have the same problem.

Most of my pans were already induction ready, so I was good to go from that sense. The only one that isn't is one I use regularly for pasta a 3 quart saucepan, so that gets heated on the regular burner.

All in all, my induction burner was one of the best purchases I have ever made.

Amazon has relatively inexpensive induction ready pans.

I have this frying pan... inexpensive and very good. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073WF2JMD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I might need one to save me thousands. My kid is addicted to Korean bbq and hot pot. Give her an induction burner and some noodles and she will be happy for hours.

It might be interesting to try putting a 5" disk of carbon steel *inside* the Revereware and see how that works (for boiling pasta, and stuff like that.)  The bottoms are pretty thin, so I don't think the disk would be too far away from the transmitter to work, but it might be too far to work well.

You don't need to stick it in the pot.

They already have induction plates on Amazon... LOTS of them.

I'd rather have a pan that's induction ready.
