Most star system probably have at least some planets so it shouldn't come as a surprise 40 Eridani A has at least one.

I remembered his name without googling it.  Did you google it to find the correct spelling?

But that the planet is on the warm edge of the habitable zone is fascinatingly coincidental.

Actually, no.  I had watched 'Metamorphosis' on TOS just a few months back. Of course I had seen that episode many times before, too.

How do they know what the habitable zone is?

The planet has a 42-day year. I wonder what that must be like? It has to mean something for seasons. Summer would be a week and a half -- that's not even time for a decent vacation.

The Sol System had a planet named Vulcan
Well sort of, they were trying to explain some observed irregularities in Mercury's obit and thought maybe another planet was responsible and named this unfound planet Vulcan. No planet was ever found and later the observed irregularities were explained by Einstein's theory of relativity. Turned out the sun's gravity was bending the light which was causing the irregularities in the observations.

Short year.  Small star, narrow "habitable" zone, close in planet.   Tidally locked?   How active and how variable is the star?

I would hazard a guess that the planet is arid, and volcanically active.

A 42 day year?

Wasn't 42 supposed to be the answer to life, the universe, and everything?

Maybe it's part of a multi-planet Trojan system and the actual year is much longer, we're just observing multiple planets passing by in the same orbit.  =D

But I ain't no astrominator, hell, I still think of Pluto as a planet.

A very logical discovery.  Spock and other Vulcans approved.  =D
