You don't see red dots on varmint or bullseye rifles, just saying. Depending on the size of the dot, it may cover the rat at 50 yards.
I don't disagree.  I just think if it is for fun or learning to shoot, I would favor that or iron sights.  A small scope would work well also.  Nikon makes  3X, but it might be intended for 223.

Yeah, I'm not finding what I was looking for exactly, unless I put my own peep sights on.

So I was looking at a savage bolt action mkii, the ruger American .22 or the Henry threaded frontier .22 lever action.

Strongly suggest you also look at CZ. The 452 I have from them is superb and is a micro Mauser action. They have a few factory threaded barrel rifles.
