IIRC, Derek Trucks is the nephew or son of Allman Bros. member Butch Trucks, and Derek started playing when he was, like, 7 mos. old or something

.
Doesn't hurt that he grew up in the tutelage of Chuck Leavell, Dickie Betts and many others.
By the time he was 8 or 10 years old, coincidentally at the height of my own lackluster professional guitar career*, several of us got to see him play when the Allmans brought him onstage and he just flat blew our tops. I knew then, that if someone helped him manage the fame & fortune and he didn't self destruct, he would be a monster. And so he is.
BTW, that's a dream concert for guitar-lovers: Clapton, Robert Cray and Derek Trucks. Wow. Goodonya!
* don't get too excited about that. I played little college town watering holes on a circuit around SW VA -- Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, Blacksburg, etc...no big deal.
