Robert E. Lee was indicted but never arrested or tried - much less convicted - of any crime, though he did lose his voting rights and the Union seized his farm, which later became Arlington National Cemetary. And as commander of Confederate forces, he made actual war against the Union for years.

Jefferson Davis was arrested and spent two years in prison awaiting a trial - which never took place - before being released. As President of the secessionist Confederate States of America, he was  the one who authorized shelling Fort Sumter, touching off the "hot" part of the Civil War.

What the January 6 people did was so very much more serious they NEEDED to be punished far more severely - if only because the Proud Boys are so much more of a threat than the Confederacy ever was.

<I saw this elsewhere, but it fits the discussion, so . . . >

They probably got spared due to Salmon Chase being tired from the involvement in the impeachment of Andrew Johnson and the nation was "healing" from the Civil War.

... and the nation was "healing" from the Civil War.
I think that was the big factor.  The intent seems to have been to bring the nation back together so the winners were willing to forgive the losers in the interest of not fanning the embers of conflict back into flame.

Healing and unity are not the goals of today.

Of either side. The players today want the division amongst the unwashed masses.

Indeed, but even being aware of that hasn't stopped either of us from stooping to it.

Lee was spared because of Gen. Grant's parole of all the surrendering Confederates (at Appomattox Court House)... when Grant heard about plans to arrest Lee, he threatened to resign from the army, believing it would violate the terms of the surrender agreement.  President Johnson backed down.

A very classy move by Gen. Grant.

Of course, Lee was never a traitor anyway, as he was a citizen of the CSA during the war.  To open another can of worms.

According to an article at Britannica, Jefferson Davis wasn't tried because they were afraid that at trial it might come out that states actually had a right to secede under the original Constitution. Nobody wanted to risk that.

I hadn't realized they had release any information on the "bomber".  This does nothing to quiet the conspiracy theories.   =)

‘NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE’… Emergency Medicine Specialists Expose Cops’ FAILED Attempt To Revive Roseanne Boyland On January 6: ‘The Way This Code Was Run This Patient Had No Chance To Survive’… ‘I’ve Never Seen Anybody Do That’
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2023/06/negligent-homicide-emergency-medicine-specialists-expose-cops-failed/

I doubt this will amount to anything, but I thought all cops got basic first aid training.  I would assume it included CPR and using a defibrillator.

I get that training for work.  Emergency defibrillators I have seen are idiot proof almost idiot proof.  You stick the pads on their skin and hit a button.  There are pictograms that show it.  I am surprised cops wouldn't at least be able to do that.  It makes me wonder who these guys were that were playing Cops that day.

Update

Quote
Daniel Rodriguez, the man who attacked then-Washington, DC, police officer Michael Fanone with an electroshock weapon in the neck during the US Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, was sentenced Wednesday to 12 and a half years in prison.

Rodriguez, 40, had pleaded guilty to four counts in February, including conspiracy, assault with a dangerous weapon and obstruction of an official proceeding.

Quote
Jackson, who called Rodriguez’s attack on Fanone a “horrific assault,” noted that while Rodriguez was trying to stop the peaceful transfer of power, Fanone “was protecting the very foundation of democracy.”

“He was protecting America,” she said.

Before the judge handed down her sentence, Rodriguez blamed his actions on his difficult upbringing, disparities between socioeconomic classes in American society, and the violent protests in the summer of 2020 in a rambling, half-hour speech.

So this guy gets 12 years for physically assaulting someone, and the other guy got 18 years for having a big mouth and being with a group the government doesn't like.

Still making arrests

Quote
An Elizabethtown man was charged June 28 for allegedly pushing against police and helping other rioters physically fight officers while trying to break into the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, according to an FBI report.

William Stover has been charged with civil disorder, unlawful entry of a restricted building, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds and impeding passage through Capitol grounds.

Stover, 46, was arrested Monday, and his felony and misdemeanor charges were then unsealed in federal court.

Is Trump next?
They will do whatever they can to keep him out of the 2024 race

Quote
Former President Donald Trump says he received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith stating that he is the target of a Jan. 6 grand jury investigation on Tuesday.

Trump said he initially received the letter on Sunday and said he expects to face both an arrest and indictment.

A government source with direct knowledge of the situation also told Fox News that Smith’s office sent Trump a target letter.

Saw some libtard talking head claiming Trump would be offered a plea deal for no jail time if he also withdrew from politics.  Not just the POTUS race, but all politics.

The theory being that if he runs and loses he then is subject to years in jail and massive fines (even from billionaire perspective).  The plea offer therefore would be an inducement to simply retire and enjoy playing golf or whatever for his last decade or so of life.

I can’t really imagine Trump accepting a plea deal like that.  He’s in it to win it, and if necessary he’d pardon himself before accepting any plea deal.  And I don’t think he’d pardon himself.  That alone would require admitting he was beaten on that matter.

This crap is only going to make him more popular with primary voters.  Which, I think is the point.

The media and the Democrats are doing whatever they can to get him the nomination (by baseless legal persecution)... so he can crash and burn in the election again.  Trump polls terribly with Independents and in a general election matchup with Biden.

DeSantis was actually competitive in the polls until Trump got in legal trouble a couple of months ago... and that got Trump a lot more support from GOP voters.

Nope, the left wants Trump as the GOP candidate.  Because he is a massive loser with everybody except about 1/2 the GOP primary voters.

I agree that is their plan. I feel like I should point out that they are only batting .500 on that plan.

And judging by some of the talking heads, the GOP may engage in some of the shenanigans the dems were pulling last time (vote harvesting, unrequested mail ballots, extra-early voting, etc.) so the same shady stuff the dems pulled may not work again.

But then again, it IS The Stupid PartyTM we're talking about, which apart from preemptive political surrender has a remarkable ability to pull defeat from the jaws of victory.

And in other 06JAN news, an FBI whistleblower is testifying that 11,000 of video is being withheld by the FBI because it would identify undercover agents committing the same crimes they've arrested protestors for.

17 years

Quote
A leader of the far-right Proud Boys has been sentenced to 17 years in prison, one of the longest sentences yet handed out over the US Capitol riot.

Prosecutors said US Army veteran Joe Biggs, 38, was an "instigator" of the storming of Congress on 6 January 2021.

The former Infowars correspondent was convicted of seditious conspiracy and other charges in May.

In court, Biggs pleaded for leniency and expressed remorse for his actions.

The sentence, handed down by US District Judge Timothy Kelly, is below both federal sentencing guidelines and the 33 years sought by prosecutors.

Biggs was convicted of a slew of charges in May, including seditious conspiracy, conspiracy to use, intimidation or threats to prevent officials from discharging their duties and interference with law enforcement during civil disorder.

In a sentencing memo, prosecutors said that Biggs - a veteran of the war in Iraq and former correspondent for conspiracy website Infowars - "employed his military experience to direct and control large groups of men under his command" to lead a "revolt against the government".

Not that I really expect to see a Republican president again, but if we do I hope it’s one with the stones to pardon those guys (or at least commute sentences).
