Hold the BONG at T-20:50.

Irritating.  Been waiting 15 minutes for an update on the hold.  They're saying it's an engine chill issue.

If they are anything like SpaceX when it comes to temperature sensitivity of propellants, they only have a little while before the propellants warm and are going to do nasty things like cavitate the turbopumps.


...and as I'm writing this, they just reset the clock and we're at T-30:00.

If they hold again, I'm going to bed rather than wait for a second resumption.

Sounds like it.  No word on it since just before when it was scheduled to touch down on the drone ship.  BO confirms they lost telemetry on the booster.  Second stage did make it to orbit.

Haven't heard what exactly happened to the 1st stage yet but I noticed on screen telemetry stopped at 4285mph/84,226ft not long after they announced 3 engine relight confirmed.
Maybe either a break up of the vehicle or an engine(s) went boom or could have just been a comms issues. Maybe the WB-57 that was in the landing area has the footage.

Absolutely.  I really hope BO succeeds in the long term.  With any luck this successful first flight attempt will encourage faster development and eventual commercial success.  Stating the obvious, multiple companies competing and offering reusable launch services will lower cost-to-orbit, and that will be beneficial to everyone.

I've been thinking for a couple years now that they are massively underestimating the reentry regime that the booster must face.  F9 does MECO at about 60 miles altitude, and NG is attempting it at about 85 miles.  I think FH center core attempts MECO at around 80 or 90 miles up and about 8000mph, and SpaceX has had big trouble recovering them.  The wear on the octaweb is brutal.  NG is only doing about 5000mph, but it's still up there pretty high and facing a lot of supersonic heating.  A lot more than F9.

I also noted that the NG was pretty slow getting off the pad.  I saw elsewhere that the TWR of the stack for the first 15 seconds was around 1.12.  I think F9 is close to 1.3, and Superheavy is currently around 1.5.  Reusability benefits from a much higher TWR, and low TWR is a hallmark of disposable rockets.
