Buying domain names?

What is the scoop on buying a domain name for a business I might start?  Is it as simple as just buying it from whatever source wants to sell it to me?

I'm not a fan of Amazon Web Services or GoDaddy because of their recent actions.  Are there domain services you recommend?

I use name.com. I haven't heard anything outrageously SJW about them.

Go there (or whatever service you choose) and type the name you want and see if it's available. Note that if you get one with a ".US", you will not be able to hide your contact information.

ARFCOM moved to Epik.  They shopped around for a bit, looking for one that would back the First Amendment.
