They list each case further down in the article.  Said they only counted cases where the pistol was fired.  Interesting research.

Setting jokes aside a moment, what I found interesting is that caliber seems less important than I thought, given my vast experience reading gun magazines and web pages since I was 16 years old.  I recall reading an article on  firearms in bear country which basically said if you had to carry a handgun, it better be .44 magnum or more.  Guess some of these bears didn't read that article..

I was thinking that while bears might charge you and kill you despite shooting, most of the time they aren't that mad or determined.  Could also be someone who is armed is more likely to be paying attention and not be blindsided by the attack.  Just guesses.

In the eastern woods I carry a gun for two legged tweakers and feral dogs. Bear have never been a problem. Sat down in the trail to watch one, fell asleep, woke up and considered I ought to know where the bear was, went back to sleep instead.
