I was thinking that while bears might charge you and kill you despite shooting, most of the time they aren't that mad or determined.  Could also be someone who is armed is more likely to be paying attention and not be blindsided by the attack.  Just guesses.

In the eastern woods I carry a gun for two legged tweakers and feral dogs. Bear have never been a problem. Sat down in the trail to watch one, fell asleep, woke up and considered I ought to know where the bear was, went back to sleep instead.
