The anime series is my favorite of the genre. I went into the live action series with guarded optimism. I'm only 5 episodes in, but so far I'm split between loving the stunning accuracy of the character design* and the liberties the writers took with the story. Overall I'm happy enough. I appreciate that most of the music is from the original. No second season is, therefore, a letdown.

*Faye's outfit and Jet's pistol are two obvious exceptions.

That is interesting.  All the fans of the anime that I see on the yutubes seem to hate it.  I never looked at either so I am just a disinterested observer. 

The actor playing the woman character put a short video on the interwebs earlier this year commenting on all the anime fans complaining that her costume isn't the same or that her breasts aren't big enough or the outfit isn't painted on.  However, it came out later that she has done nudity before and wore an outfit very similar to the anime costume.  It was a big negative to fans looking forward to the show.  Probably set up a lot of them to dislike the show if it wasn't really good. 


I also noticed a general dislike among fans of a lot of animated or printed stories that Hollywood seems to be making very little effort to cast actors who look and act like the characters they already know.  They don't have to be exact replicas, but something close is appreciated.  Not sure how close these characters came, but it was another comment I heard.

It's one of my favorite Animes as well, and while the show is very different, I am still enjoying it.

The best way I can describe it is they "Americanized" the storytelling.  The big bad guy shows up much earlier, Spike's background is foreshadowed (and straight up told) much earlier in the series, just in general the overall plot, and themes are much more spelled out and served to the viewer on a platter than the Anime.

Which, to the folks who consider themselves gatekeepers of "True Anime", I'm sure is heresy of the highest order.

Spike and Jet are very well done.  In the anime, Jet carries a Walther P99, in the live action he carries a Mateba.  Other than that, his character design is spot-on.  He even sounds just like the voice actor from the English dub.  As mentioned, Faye's outfit is less revealing, but her outfit in the anime wasn't something that could be reasonably replicated in the live action show.  "Fan service" is what it's called in anime.

The supporting characters are also instantly recognizable.

I only watched the first two episodes, but I really liked it.

I never saw the anime, but I watched a lot of anime of the same period and IMHO, the live action nails the style and flavor of the genre. I particularly loved the fact that they recreated reflection shots that are very typical in anime.

The real reason I haven't watched more is because Dad would have gone bonkers over it and I keep wanting to call him in to watch.

Also, from what I read, they tried to do the accurate Faye outfit and it literally didn't work for filming.

The first few minutes of the anime is a first-person view of a guy on powerful mind-altering drugs murdering a bar full of people.  Is that what you meant by "jerky?"
