Popcorn preferences (methods and toppings?)

We like popcorn during winter months. A few years ago a family friend gave us a huge bag of Amish popcorn. It was really good and it led us to Lehman’s store as a source for a really good stove top popper - one with a heavy bottom, glass dome lid with a handcrank sweep, and a rubber port in the lid to add the corn when the test kernels start to pop and to add butter if desired.
As a traditionalist, it was perfect.
Have tried some different varieties of popping corn, some local, some Amish, etc.
We don’t see a great difference in corn but prefer the “no hull” type.
Instead of butter, we have now discovered Costco brand Parmesan with truffle and black garlic topping. I have tried it on other foods but somehow nothing else comes close to the taste of it on popcorn. Probably because the popcorn itself doesn’t add a lot of its own flavor.
Tried microwave and air poppers in the past but just not as good as stove top.
Still like sea salt and real butter but if you are a “popper” and a Costco shopper give it a try.
Anybody have any alternatives to recomend?

I prefer my popcorn with butter and very fine salt, or butter and powdered chicken bullion, or butter and powdered cheese.

Stir Crazy popper, white kernel corn from NW Iowa, oil with a pat of butter, and salt and pepper on top.

KC, the popper you use is the same that I use to roast coffee.

I went off to college with a stir crazy popper 46 years ago. They work good.
We get the same result with the crank sweep on ours. The bottom of ours says patent applied for but I tried to look it up as a possible gift and I don’t see the same thing available. A similar one with metal vs glass lid and looks maybe not as heavy.
Side discussion. Anybody shop lehmans? If I ever drive through that area I want to check out their physical store.

I used to have a Whirly Pop - Not as "high tech" as the fancy glass lid things, but it worked very similarly, and made great popcorn.
 
Too much melted butter, and fine unseasoned popcorn salt.

Mine is always popped in a large pan, lately the All-Clad wok like thing. Butter and more butter. One of my few uses for iodized salt, the pink or sea salt is too coarse. Sometimes I break into the canning salt. Rarely Old Bay for seasoning, it is good.

Wife has a Stir Crazy popper somewhere but I haven't seen it for a few years.  Mostly we just pop it in a big RevereWare stock pot. 

Unflavored popcorn salt (it's ground much finer than table salt or canning salt) and a little real butter.

We use a sea salt that is flaked very fine. My wife (the spice queen) has a pantry dedicated to seasonings and herbs. I couldn’t tell you how many kinds of salt we have.
Not to mention how many different oregano or chili powder or curry etc. hell, I’m told Italian oregano and Mexican oregano and Turkish oregano are as different as anything can be.

For popping I have a microwave bowl. It has some sort of coating in the bottom that gets really hot and pops the corn. IIRC my Mom and Dad got it for me when I moved into my first apartment in 1989.

Doesn't need any oil, either.

We love popcorn and a few years ago my wife purchased me this.



We order Snappy on Amazon.  It’s a very good product and not super salty.

Ranch and cheddar are quite good, but the butter salt tastes... kind of weird.

I make popcorn in a large/deep fry pan with a glass lid.  A couple of tablespoons of oil in the pan with whatever kernels I have on hand.  Popcorn salt on it when it's done.  Butter sometimes, but not necessary.  Don't do other flavorings, just enjoy that salty goodness.

Sometimes, I'll do a bag of microwave popcorn at work as a quasi-lunch.  None of the butter flavors work for me.  Just plain salad corn.  Not as good as real popcorn in a pan, but not bad

The Cheddar is my favorite and my grandson likes the Bacon Cheddar.
