New Guns for 2023
« on: January 16, 2023, 11:01:15 PM »
Some announcements came up in the last week plus SHOT show is this week.  Some of it looks pretty interesting.

Rock Island Armory Introduce New RIA 5.0 Pistol

Note the square barrel.  Looks unique which has my interest.  I'll wait and see what the street price is.

FN Announces the New 510 and 545 10mm and .45 ACP Pistols
https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/fn-announces-the-new-510-and-545-10mm-and-45-acp-pistols/
Maybe we will hear more about this after the SHOT show range day.  I like my FNX-45.  I am curious if the mags will be compatible.  Not sure about the 10 mm version.  Might be nice if it tames recoil a bit.

Dan Wesson is finally rolling out the DWX pistol.  Looks really cool.

Next-Gen Beretta Cheetah: The NEW 80X
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncyLxSUkKMo

Looks like Beretta is coming out with a new version of the Model 84.  No mag compatibility according to the video.  I wonder if they will do a 32 auto model 81 version.  I got one of the Model 81's that came in a year or two ago.  It is very pleasant plinker gun.

Smith & Wesson is changing the way we suppress the AR-15
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IC2JcenW7Fo

S&W has a new suppressor, but what is interesting is they are doing a dual port gas block if I heard the video right.  Supposedly it helps minimize gas blow back on the shooter.  I am sure there will be reviews.

Definitely not a gun, but something I recently became aware of.  Looks interesting, but $400 is a bit more than a maul at Home Depot.

I've been staring at the disassembly of that RIA for a week trying to figure out how it works.

The 9mm Henry Homesteader: IT TAKES GLOCK MAGS

A traditional looking semi-auto that takes Glock mags.  Sounds like a winner if it works.  $950 MSRP isn't bad compared to the competition.

Of course, they really need to make it in 10 mm.

Matrix Arms “Cage” AR-15 Dual Pump Handguard
https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2023/01/17/shot-2023-matrix-arms-cage-ar-15-dual-pump-handguard/

An AR that can be configured as semi-auto or pump action.  Supposedly 50 state legal.

I am glad I live in a mostly free state.

A $1000 PCC that isn't even that ergonomic?   Henry is smoking crack.

Depends on what you mean by ergonomic.  I like that styling and grew up shooting rifles like that.  I don't want a pistol grip on everything.

Also depends on what the actual street price ends up at.  9mm semi-auto rifles run a wide range of pricing.  That still in the medium tier.

New Mike-102 AR/AK/HK Hybrid from Foxtrot Mike
https://www.ammoland.com/2023/01/new-mike-102-ar-ak-hk-hybrid-from-foxtrot-mike/?ct=t(RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN)#axzz7qf0QMu00

When I saw a teaser of this on their instagram, I was excited about this.  But it is basically a piston AR that takes 5.56 AK mags.  I really don't know what to think about that.  I have an AK in 5.56 so those mags should work, but I am not sure why I would do that over a standard AR.  Might depend on the price.

5.45x39 would be more interesting to me.

A lot of people pine for the Marlin Camp Carbine and the Henry since it looks very much like it should fit the bill.

I had a Camp Carbine for awhile.

I didn't like it.

It was WAY too chunky around the stock wrist. As in, so chunky the only way I could shoot it even semi-comfortably was to take a Martini-Henry hold on it and not wrap my thumb over the top of the wrist.

And that wasn't conducive to a stable shooting platform at all.

So I ended up selling it.

Unfortunately there's no one single standard for 5.56 AK mags and they're for the most part not interchangeable between AK manufacturers with many having their own somewhat different design. Not saying yours won't work just that it's far from being guaranteed they will.

It's DI, not Piston.

I have a Foxtrot Mike upper and while I don't have a ton of rounds through it, my feelings are mixed right now.  It has a bunch of neat ideas but is clunkier in operation than I expected it to be.  I'm also not finding the side-folding to be the game changer I thought it would be.

I agree, but there is some flexibility.  There is potential for mag fit issues with 7.62 AK's also.

The side folding stock is useful in some cases, but I find I don't really need it or use it all that much.  It is most useful to me in allowing me to carry it in a smaller rifle bag or stowing it somewhere.

Maybe you misunderstand.

The fit issues with 7.62x39  mags can usually be fixed with a file, in fact it's often expected to have to do so due to in variation in tolerances. AK 5.56 mags on the other hand are often a proprietary design to the manufacturer of that particular 5.56 AK.

Maybe we are talking past each other or different experiences.  I have two 5.56 AK's whose mags don't quite fit each other.  I never had any problems with 7.62 AK's until K-USA, but they fixed that issue.  I have had more issues with 5.45 mags, but that was with side to side fit, not front to back.

My K-USA 7.62 AK had to be sent back because only the mag that came with it would fit (none of my combloc mags would work).  Couldn't get them to lock in.  I think they readjusted the placement of the mag catch.  Seems they had one type mag they function tested with.  They said they fixed that oversight in their QA/QC.  I wasn't the first to call.  Had it back in a week or so.
