RIP, Gen Bernard T. Mittemeyer (ret)
« on: January 26, 2023, 09:42:53 AM »
For those with an interest in modern military history, Bernard Mittemeyer, former Surgeon General of the Army, passed away yesterday. No obit to link yet.

He was a friend of SWMBO's family and one helluva nice guy. Funny as heck, too. He could be scary serious if necessary, but always up for a good laugh and had a mischievous streak a mile long. Not only Surgeon General of the Army, but also one of the physicians who treated Kennedy after he was shot in Dallas. Never flaunted his status or experiences, though. If you tried to call him Mr, General, or Sir, he would chuckle, beam a big toothy smile, and reply in his distinct Dutch accent, "Thank you. I'm just Bernie". If you asked him what he did after the military, he would reply, "I was a plumber". In reality he was head of Urology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, but that was Bernie.

More active in his 90's than most folks a third his age, but health problems finally compounded to a point even his iron will and dogged determination couldn't overcome.

RIP, Bernie.

It's all about the pancakes, people.
