Edited to add: OK, my cousin didn't know anything about it - Tinley Park isn't that big, but she didn't see or hear any disturbances, and so far she hasn't seen anything about it on the local news. So maybe it wasn't that big a deal after all.

Disorderly, but only five or six arrests - one cop had a minor injury. No reports of arson, looting, stabbings or shootings, so it didn't rise to the level of 2020s MostlyPeacefulProtests^TM.  (Maybe because the local cops did their job rather than standing down?)

Still the kind of thing I'd try real hard to avoid.

Random observation number 5,432. Whenever a "brawl" makes the news because of the location or number of people it is overwhelmingly blacks involved. Maybe there is a lot more truth in the statement that many conservative blacks have made pertaining to lack of fathers in the community to provide moral guidance than people want to admit.

Maybe... but the rates of homicide committed by blacks was actually much higher in the earlier part of the 20th century when bastardy rates were much lower.  There has got to be a lot more going on.

Yes... look at table 1.  I was pretty surprised to learn this was the case as well.  The black illegitimacy rate in the 1930s was around 20% I think, around what the white rate is now.

The white homicide rate is interesting.  It has varied from around 2.3-8, and has not shown a constant trend one way or another. 

The black rate has jumped around some, but is still less than it has been historically.

Keeping the peace

A  Chicago man wearing a neon yellow “peacekeepers” vest helped a group of people beat and rob a motorist in Little Village on Friday night, according to a Chicago Police Department report. The allegations come after city and state officials lauded the use of “peacekeepers” as a tool they would deploy over the Memorial Day weekend to tamp down violence across the city.

After officials said a man wearing a yellow “peacekeeper” vest was among a group of offenders who severely beat and robbed a driver in Little Village on Friday, a proponent of the anti-violence programs argued that the accused man had simply “mishandled the stress” of working as a peacekeeper.

But the other "Peace Keepers" did a great job.

Data from Chicago police show that from 6p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Monday, at least 11 people were killed and at least 53 others, including two 2-year-olds, were wounded in shootings across the city.

According to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times, it was the deadliest Memorial Day weekend in Chicago in eight years.

About that peacekeeper:

Montes, who “complained of back and neck injuries, as well as PTSD,” was treated at St. Anthony’s Hospital, according to the CPD report.

His defense attorney on Sunday said he has a 14-year-old child and is a certified emergency medical technician. He volunteers “when he can” and goes to church, the lawyer said. But neither the public defender nor Golaszewski mentioned any peacekeeping activities that Montes might have been involved with.

Montes is on parole for a 2012 case in which he pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle. Golaszewski said those allegations stemmed from an incident involving a rival gang member of Montes in Little Village. Court records show Montes was originally charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

He was released on May 6, 2022, after serving a little more than ten years of a 12-year sentence, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. State officials are reviewing his parole status in light of the new allegations.

Guess who's Harvard’s new ‘Health Policy and Leadership’ teacher?

    Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s next chapter will take her to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where she will teach a course tentatively titled “Health Policy and Leadership,” drawing heavily on her experiences steering the city through the COVID-19 pandemic and grappling with health equity issues.

    Lightfoot will be the Richard L. and Ronay A. Menschel senior leadership fellow at the school for the quarter beginning at the end of August.

    Eric Andersen, director of the Senior Leadership Fellows Program and studio programming at the school, said in an interview, “we reached out” to Lightfoot because “I think as mayor and as a leader she faced many pressing public health issues, most notable navigating the pandemic.
