I was in high school when a teacher said there should be no tax on earnings under some amount, and a 100% tax on earnings above that amount. (I think it was $100,000.)
I asked him what he was going to do if he needed surgery a couple months into the year after all the surgeons went on vacation. Or if he needed a lawyer in October and all the lawyers were on vacation. Or if he needed an electrician, a plumber, or anyone else who took less than 12 months to hit the $100,000 threshold and immediately went home, not to return until January 1 of the follwing year.
I also asked what he was going to eat since farmers would be sure not to grow over $100k worth of crops or cattle per year.
After all, if .gov is going to take 100% of your earning above $100k . . . who in their right mind is going to continue working once they hit that threshold?
Teacher was not pleased . . . particularly at the way the rest of the class laughed at him.
