I've been a big fan of Jonahan Haidt for several years. He's an atheist liberal who had an epiphany about moral values and their relationship to liberal and conservative worldviews. His moral foundations theory is, I think, a very coherent explanation about the difference between liberal and conservative worldviews.
Haidt claims to have converted to becoming a "moderate" now.
Here's a great essay that goes though part of his reasoning. Keep in mind, Haidt is still pretty much an atheist leftist, and hence he's going to make some stupid statements like "God is society" and "Democrats appeal to reason" (some women have penises! being the classic example I suppose). Still, if you can overlook that crap, there are a lot of gems here.
