How do I remove the Crane on a S&W Mod 36?
It is gunked up and a BEAR to open even after soaking it in WD-40! Had to bop it with a rubber coated hammer handle to get it open!!!
Don't panic, It was only on the very front of the cylinder so it wouldn't warp the crane (I hope).

The screw on the right side of the gun just above the trigger should be all you need to remove to remove the crane.

Soak it in CLP
As a future tip keep WD-40 far away from you firearms. I've seen WD-40 gunk up more firearms than I can shake a stick at.

Cordex is correct.
If you need to remove the ejector rod, I believe it is reverse thread iirc
Be very careful with the side plate and screws. There are some good tube you videos midway and brownells etc

If, after you remove the screw, the crane still won't come out because it's so gaked up, wrap the gun in saran wrap and put it in the freezer for a couple of days.

I've often found a trip to the freezer to be VERY useful in helping get stuck stuff apart, whether it's rusted, heavily gunked, or just pain friction stuck.

Looks like (surprise!) your basic S&W snub.  Treat it right.  "K Frame" could probably tell you more on them than I could.

Looks to be a standard nickle plated Model 36.

Pinned barrel, so prior to circa 1983.

The WD-40 (too late now, just reading the responses) worked and repeatedly opening and closing it between WD-40 douches loosened it up to normal function.

THANKS for the links! I will probably be popping the side plate for some deep cleaning to get the WD & Gunk out of her.

I've found spraying Gun Scrubber (or the cheaper alternative, brake cleaner) through a pistol flushes out a LOT of gunk; unless the internals are rusted, that should clean them out pretty well.  I avoid WD-40 on guns since it seems to deposit a varnish-like coating over time, though it might be a field expedient if your gun got wet outdoors, just until you could give it a proper cleaning.

A follow up with a good gun oil is mandatory - I use Break Free CLP as my "go to" gun oil. (For gun grease, I use Tetra.)
