Bourbon of the Month Club
« on: June 19, 2023, 11:57:29 PM »
Back in the days before Falling In Love, and going broke because of that, I had a really nice shelf of Bourbon whiskies in Bogie's Bunker.

The strategy is to buy a bottle every month, and consume no more than half of it, then relegate it to The Bar, where it is then reserved for when friends show up.

Only real criteria is that it really should be decent at two ounces over ice in a rocks glass. No mixers, no water.

Got the idea this month again - first of the month, I picked up a bottle of this...

https://luxrowdistillers.com/rebel-bourbon/#varieties-2

Not bad, considering... Outfit is based out of Bardstown and... St. Louis... so what the heck. I think I have maybe two or three more servings, and then it goes on the shelf.

I'll be adding a bottle of Blanton's when I see it. Any other ideas?

Not a bourbon, but Glengoolie Blue is a heck of a scotch if you can find it.

Next month is probably going to be Knob Creek...

When I had the big house in the 'burbs, the theater's bathroom had a shelf around the top, and I had a whole bunch of empty Knob Creek bottles lined up - I saved 'em from the twice yearly machine gun shoot trips...

I've never cared much for bourbon at all, but if I had to choose, I'd take Wild Turkey 101.

I am getting ready to visit some friends in Dana Point and was thinking of taking down a bottle of Angel's Envy to enjoy but then I got cheap and decided to take down my unopened bottle of 12 year old Tullamore Dew. I hope he likes it. ;)

Picked up a bottle of Evan Williams 1783... I think I liked the Rebel better.

If you haven't tried it yet, Buffalo Trace is quite good and reasonably priced.

When I spent  night or two in Estes Park I discovered the Stanley Hotel had a very large whiskey bar. Of the ones I tried I really liked Angel's Envy finished in Caribbean rum barrels. I was doing whiskeys finished in rum barrels that night and of the ones I tried Angel's Envy and Tullamore Dew (although an Irish Whiskey) finished in rum barrels were my favorite.

Okay - it is not a bourbon, but I was in a mood a little while back.

Damn fine.

So, this month, I got this... Meh...

Not quite down to half yet - I figure a few ounces will mix okay with some diet coke. Maybe.

Elijah Craig small batch.  And if you're doing non-bourbons too, try Wild Turkey 101 Rye.

Usually I just sip Kirkland Canadian whisky, neat.

I've sampled a fairly wide variety of bourbons in my 80 years.  I have found that the lower shelf bourbons with the lower prices, to my taste buds, have more flavor for sipping neat or with one cube, than the upper shelf pricey bourbons.  There are a lot of Irish whisky's as well and I find Bushmills Original satisfactory with a cube for sipin' and makes a very tasty Perfect Manhattan.

I'm a bit more snobbish when it comes to rum.  For sippin', no ice, I'm kinda stuck on Pyrat and Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva.  Never mix those two.  For Rum and Coke, any non spiced rum will do...I like a dark rum for that.

I recently discovered a local distillery called Seven Devils, and they put out both a bourbon and a rye. I do not like the bourbon, but absolutely love the rye. They also make brandies using local fruits. I picked up a bottle of the pear, and it was really good.

Very Old Barton
I can get a 1.75L bottle from Sams for $14. I prefer it to many of the $$$$ Bourbons

When I was a young man, V.O.B. was one of the preferred beverages in Mercer County, Kentucky. Within an easy drive of Lawrenceburg, Bardstown,

I'm not much of a bourbon drinker and never tasted it myself, but somewhere along the line I heard this stuff is supposed to be pretty good:  https://shop.twobitchspirits.com/

Okayfine - November's bottle was Knob Creek. It is just as good as I remembered, and is sitting there mostly full. December, I found a bottle of Very Old Barton - Not too shabby, and a good honest bourbon whiskey.

Hard to catch in stock Bourbon.
Check with your local liquor stores and ask if they get it in from time to time and you may be able to get your name put on a list.
Also check with Costco and or Sam's club

Meh

What is meh about it? I haven't had it yet, probably pick a bottle up next time I'm in MSP because Iowa liquor selection is poor because the state controls the distribution.

I know it's a wheated bourbon and not everyone likes that.
