American crosses North Korean border
« on: July 18, 2023, 09:12:57 AM »
Foxnews headline says US soldier but not seeing any mention of that anywhere else.
Either some nut who thought it would be funny or someone who wanted to "escape" the oppression of the US for a free country.

North Korea detains US soldier who crossed Military Demarcation Line, official says
https://www.foxnews.com/world/north-korea-detains-us-national-who-crossed-military-demarcation-line

From BBC News

Quote
Man laughed and ran towards border - witness

A person has spoken to the BBC's US partner CBS News

about what they saw when the US national crossed.

The unnamed witness, who was part of a tour group at the time, says the man "gave out a loud 'ha ha ha'" before he ran in between some buildings in the direction of the North Korean border.

"I thought it was a bad joke at first, but when he didn't come back, I realised it wasn't a joke, and then everybody reacted and things got crazy."

They add that there were no North Korean soldiers visible when the man crossed.

The witness says the tour group was rushed back to give statements after the man fled and were then taken to their bus.

"It actually hit me quite hard," the witness says.

First thought was some dumbass figuring they could hop across for a quick "Look at Me!" moment. Not enough info yet to actually tell what happened.

Looks like BBC Updated the story:

Quote
The US national who has been detained is a solider, according to CBS News, the BBC's partner in the US.

The soldier was being escorted back to the US for disciplinary reasons, but after going through airport security they somehow returned and joined a tour at the border, a US official told CBS.

Two US officials speaking on condition of anonymity separately told the Reuters news agency that the detained person is a soldier.

Wonder what that was for?
And it sounds like his/her escort dropped the ball

Why, if he was being escorted for disciplinary action, be part of a tour group?

Why, if he was being escorted for disciplinary action, be part of a tour group?

Apparently after escaping his escort he joined up with a tour group.

And he has been IDed

Quote
The soldier who crossed into North Korea is Private 2nd Class Travis King, officials have told the BBC's US partner CBS News

As we previously reported, an official told CBS the soldier was being escorted out of the country for disciplinary reasons and had gone through airport security, but managed to make his way out of the terminal before joining a border tour.

A third source, a defence official, later told CBS that the soldier had "wilfully" gone across the border. His motivation remains unclear.

If they ever give him back, we can UCMJ him for whatever charges he already had, and desertion.

How about we empty our prisons and let Little Kim warehouse our bad guys for a few years? Sounds like the fiscally responsible thing to do. We just need to demand their release and he'll keep them indefinitely.  >:D

The incident happened a day after King was escorted to a South Korean airport following his release from prison, where he had been jailed for an altercation with locals. He was due to fly back to the US and report to Fort Bliss, Texas.

But in a near-farcical twist, King was only taken as far as security - then left alone because his minder was unable to pass through with him without a ticket.

Is it normal for this type of person to be allowed to fly back alone?

Quote
The Korean Herald reported the US national had 'defected' to North Korea, although officials in the Pentagon and State Department have not given a motive for his actions.

King is believed to have spent two months in custody in South Korea. He then spent a week under observation at a US base in South Korea before leaving the facility on Monday.

Personally I would say let this person rot over there but I bet Biden and gang are already cooking up some sort of juicy deal to give to the N.Koreans

A little bit more detail

Quote
PV2 King was reportedly investigated for assault in South Korea in September 2022. According to local media, he was suspected of punching a Korean national in a nightclub in Seoul.

He was fined 5m won (£,3,000; $3,950) for "repeatedly kicking" the back door of a police car and screamed "foul language" at the officers trying to apprehend him.

Local reports quoting officials said he was released on 10 July after serving two months in jail on assault charges, but did not elaborate.

Going out on a bit of limb here but in that one photo at the dailymail link does he look a bit effeminate? Something very weird going on with his eyebrow area. Is that makeup? Looks off to me.
Could be some recent events coloring my vision here.

[I'm assuming he was kicking the back door from the inside]

If they fined miscreants in our country 4K every time they acted up during arrest, we could end the national debt!  In fairness, our police also routinely scream "foul language", so maybe our culture is a little more permissive.

Many a American has found out the hard way that most police outside of the US will not put up with the crap ours are forced to put up with here.

The Seoul court said on September 25 last year King punched a man in the face at a club several times but the case was settled.

Two weeks later, on October 8, police officers responded to a report of another altercation involving King, and tried to question him. He continued with his 'aggressive behavior' without answering questions from police, according to the court document.

Police placed him in the backseat of their patrol car where he shouted expletives and insults against Koreans, the Korean army, and the Korean police, the ruling said.

During his tirade, he kicked the vehicle's door several times, causing about 584,000 won ($461) in damages, the ruling said.

While it could have been a femboy (It's 2023 after all), the scenario I've seen play out a lot, is young soldiers go to the Juicy Bar, the girls sit with them and chat them up while running up hundreds or thousands on a bar tab.  (sometimes there's a back room tug, but often not.  These girls are good at promising lots without outright contracts).  When the money runs out, the girl moves on, the guy feels cheated, and gets loud, then the bouncer steps in and the fight is between the bouncer and the soldier.  Cops and MP's get called.

The other common situation is dude falls in love with hooker, pimp intervenes, hands are thrown.  I've seen that in Korea and Bahrain.

Young idiots will spend money, and girls will pretend to like them for money.  I imagine there were some hot young Celts near Hadrian's Wall raking in the Denarius (Denari?) and there will be hot young Martian girls at the frontier stations willing to spend time with Colonial Marines in exchange for credits.

Private second class?

Yes. The junior enlisted ranks have changed since I was in the Army during Vietnam. Back then, Private (E-1) and Private 9E-2) had no stripe. Somewhere along the way, what had been the single PFC (E-3) stripe was  assigned to the newly created rank of Private Second Class (E-2), and the Private First Class stripe got a rocker.
